I need a good exhaust system.
Hey Guys, I've just sold my Greddy Power extreme and the SP. I loved the high flowing characteristic of the P/E but hate the ricey look to it. I like the way the SP looked, but it did not flow well enough. I lost 1psi over the P/E.
I am looking for cat back that will flow as good, if not better than the P/E, without being too loud. If you have tried more than one type of cat back, please give me some tips. What I'm thinking of getting next: HKS carbon Hiper, M2 dual tip, Racing Beat, or fabricate my own exhaust. If I fabricate one, which muffler should I get? |
I'm going to try out a Borla muffler. Steve Kahn and his 10 second FD has an XR-1 Racing muffler. They pretty much only allow like a 1-2 hp drop when compared to a straight pipe, which is pretty damn good. They come in a variety of different sizes and shapes. The are aircraft steel and have stainless steel packing. I know people sometimes are concerned about the packing, but I even gave Borla a call once, and they told me their packing can withstand heat from any engine without breaking up. Even the heat of a rotary. Interesting thing is that even BEFORE I mentioned I had a rotary, he told me it could withstand it, so right there I was happy about it. I just basically asked him what temperatures can their packing withstand, and he told me it can withstand any temperature a racing engine can pump out. Even that of a rotary engine :)

It only has a 2.5" inlet and two 2" outlets. I LOVE the way it sounds. It gives it a nice low mellow tone and definitely doesn't sound ricey. |
Cannon tips
I really liked the look of the Greddy PE, but then I have a Honda CRX also. I blew up a picture of one and the can is huge, did you have problems over speed bumps?
I seem to be leaning towards the Apexi dual N1's, since it's a different look close up but stock/sleeper far away. I don't want kids hovering over my rocket in the parking lot. |
I have the N1 duals, and a borla xr-1 in a midpipe. The borla xr1 really quieted it down when cruising, but still very loud at WOT.
I would however recommend it, the police don't bother me anymore. Mike |
XR-1 Muffler
I wonder how loud this system would be? What size would be best, and the biggest size that would fit under the car? Is it a straight-through design that isn't preforated out on the inside of the muffler? Would like to hear some results, both power and sound...

What's the best way to have the XR1 installed? Buy a midpipe + xr1 and do it that route or buy a XR1 and let a exhaust shop connect it to my dp and catback?? I would think the second route would be cheaper too.

Any GOOD shop won't need to use a midpipe as a model. So it's best if you call up your local Hi-Per muffler shop, tell them what you have planned, and they will tell you what they can or can't do. Your BEST bet is to find a shop that has a Mandrel bending machine.
