I got bored so I took out my motor
 

It started to snow up here so I figured why not start pulling things apart. The motor came out pretty smoothly except for we lifted it out with the downpipe attached. Not that it makes it much harder but somehow the downpipe got wedged in-between the undercarriage and the tranny. After working on that for about an hour and attempting to take the downpipe off somehow it just lifted out with the downpipe still on. So once we had the motor out Dean gave it what it had coming. hehe :boink:

Now it is on the stand and waiting for me to tear it down to the block.

Total time from chassy to stand, about 5 hours including the DP complications. Also much thanks to Dean and Ryan who helped.

Sorry if I missed another of your threads, but why are you pulling the motor? It kinda sounds like you were just bored.

Over the summer my rear rotor lost some compression. Not much but it was getting worse as time progressed. There was still plenty of power but the idle was crapped out, a lot less mpg, not to mention the missing sound when cranked. I tested the compression when it happened... 120psi even on the front and 100psi even in the rear. The mazda manual says no more than 20psi difference.

Just wait till you leave the AC and PS out, and go single.... You can essential pull the engine out in under an hour.... thats fron puttin your coveralls on to sittin inside with a cup of hot chocolate :)

did you disconnect the harness at the ecu or at the engine?

cant you see the harness sitting in the corner of the engine bay? :D

this guy has had problems with remans so maybe hes real familiar with it now...I have a single setup and couldnt pull my turbo manifold and downpipe in an hour so hes a fucking expert

Im pretty sure he had around 12k on it.

Were guessing it was a side seal. I think hes looking to retain the PS and AC but we beat some AC lines on the way out. I believe he will be putting in a T-78 with partial bridge port as well as some other high-tech goodies. Hopefully we'll have it ready for the fall MADS.

actually i think this could be possible, i've a got vband on my downpipe, so that takes only a second to take off, and without any connecitons on the ac or ps, there really isn't anything else connected, besides the heater hoses into the cabin, fuel lines, and the wiring harness.

or am i missing something? i've never actually took it out before.... i mean, of course you'd have to dissconect the tranny too, but thats not that hard....

Any way, I pull the tranny with the engine.
9 bolts on the PPF.
Pull the tranny cover off, undo four bolts on short shifter.
Undo 2 motor mount bolts.
Undo V Band Flange.
Undo harness at ECU.
Pull Harness through firewall.
Undo two oil clips on oil cooler lines.
Take off intercooler pipe.
Undo Fuel Feed, Fuel Return and Charcoal Canister line.

I do believe that is it. And I have had one reman go bad on me, and have pulled an engine twice. Anyone not using an impact to undo PPF and motor mount bolts is wasting time. But even that shouldn't add to much time.

1st time i had help, second time i did it by myself.

That might be a little excessive, but I am also one of the first people to start making the 5 spd --> Auto conversion so "mainstream" now (read not first to do it, but first to publicly show how easy it is to do and and how relatively cheap it can be don. Everyone was so worried shit wouldn't work. Ask Jonski and a few others if you don't remember ;)

You can't be scared to wrench into these cars... They are just machines...

After the motor was apart looks like I was having problems with sticking apex seals on the rear rotor. Most of the seals seem to still be in good condition.

I know I can pull my turbo/manifold/wastegate/downpipe off in under 30 minutes. One V-Band, 6 bolts, one -4 AN oil feed, one hose clamp oil return, one Wideband 02 Connector.

Too bad I can pull the motor in about an hour and a half smokin' and jokin'.

had my motor pulled, replaced, and running again in just under 8 hours total...great to have the right tools for the job....makes a world of difference!

Try removed, REBUILT and replaced in 9 hrs. Seen it done. Me and Dragon did an FD in about 14 hrs with a good 3hrs in the middle trying to convince the guy that he didn't want to make the race the next morning. Didn't work, and the fucker went on to win his class.

Mine came out in about an hour and 15-20 minutes.. First time I ever did it. It's VERY easy. :)

Dude im serious its you. You are a rotary mechanic. There arent many other people that have an easy time doing these things. I just hate to see you guys saying an hour. I cant polish up my tail lights and reinstall them in an hour. I can barely change the spark plugs and oil in 1 hour. I guess I could do it in 20 minutes but I dont want to. Last time I pulled a motor on a nearly stock car dont ask how long it took. Id take a few hours pulling my motor now on purpose thats how I work.

and thanks for asking about the polishing. Its going well. I wish I had any time away from school to do more of it. The parts have turned out fantastic however and Im very happy with all of the new tools I purchased for the job they make it more fun. Now you are going to tell me you can polish a uim in 14 minutes lol and you found better tools for cheaper

i am not a rotary mechanic.

when i pulled the engine on my car, i did it essentially by myself. It took about 4-6 hours. But that was with not knowing what the hell to do. Plus there was a lot of stock BS involved.

Once the haltech/etc goes in, i bet i could do it in an hour.

it's not hard to do this stuff. For a single/standalone on an FD i don't see an hour and a half being too short.
