I burnt out the clutch... I think

Ok so my clutch has been feeling a little soft lately and burning pretty easy. Then today I went out for a drive today since the weather was real nice and I dropped it from 5th to third coming out of an onramp somewhere between 60-70 mph. As soon as I shifted the car reeked of burnt clutch and smoke came out of the shift boot for about 2 seconds.

I immediately shifted up to 5th and checked my guages (including fuel ratio and boost) and everything was nominal, then I looked at my arm console and the overheat light was OFF and finally I looked to the hood and saw no smoke. I parked the car, checked for smoke, fire, anything unusual and found nothing.

I started the car, shifted into reverse and had some trouble getting the car to reverse out, shifted to 1st and the car creeped forward, shifted to 2nd around 12 mph and the acceleration was horrible. I revved the car to 5,000rpms and I was still only accelerating at about 1 mph/2 seconds. It felt like the clutch wasn't grabbing at all. Oh and I could just let the clutch immediately out on 1st and the car wouldn't stall-out.

So does it sound like the clutch is gone?

Maybe. Is the clutch sticking to the floor. Maybe a combination of burnt clutch and old or worn slave cylinder/master cylinder.

ive done it. donot get a puck disc clutch. act street strip i advise.

I'm very happy with my Act Extreme ZX3-XT00
It has an upgraded Street Disk (not a puck disc) with an Extreme Pressure Plate. Has a great bite and is still easy to drive, no sigificant difference in pedal pressure either.

if you have the money get an ACT Street/Strip

you should have replaced it when it started to get soft dude.

kale717 09-20-04 07:52 AM

No the clutch isn't sticking to the floor

kale717 09-20-04 07:54 AM

Can I get an ACT street plate for my normal clutch or do I have to buy the whole clutch. $900 is out of my price range.

blueskaterboy 09-20-04 07:55 AM

eventually you'll need to replace the slave/master cylinders. not right now though.

basically when you start to feel like the clutch has a mind of its own, replace them asap. dont wait, because if one of them goes you will be stranded. usually the slave first and then the master, and it'll mess up your new clutch.

blueskaterboy 09-20-04 07:56 AM

$500

if you really dont have money right now you could just get a stock disc from malloy mazda.

Easiest way to see if your clutch is dying is to put in 5th a deadstop and let the clutch out like normal. If it stalls, then its alright, if it doesn't, you may have a problem. :)

$900 usually includes a new flywheel. You don't necessarily need a new flywheel, but you'll need to inspect your stock one to see if it needs to be resurfaced when you change out the clutch.

i thought the best combo was an OEM clutch disc and a 30% stronger preassure plate for street use?

lol that was in SCC i think
