I am a noob and I am hoping to be a LUCKY noob
 

So I got my first FD. It has 23,000 original miles on it. The previous owner was not the original owner and didnt know much about FDs. He thought the original owner did some things to it but wasnt sure. Since this is my first one, I dont know enough about them to be able to recognize what is stock and what isnt stock. I know the exhaust is not stock, but as far as the engine... no clue. Can you take a look at my photo and let me know what is not stock? I also included a picture of the exhaust. If anyone can reconize what brand it is, please let me know. If it is a bad or cheap one, don't feel bad letting me know that too :) I am embarassed with the photo of it... my gravel driveway was wet when I pulled it in so it is dirty.

Also, if I get underneath it, how can I tell if my downpipe and midpipe are stock?

It doesn't have the Efini Y-pipe, it's an early '93 with the silver painted plastic Y-pipe.

That is an aftermarket cat-back, looks like an old Greddy/Trust cat-back.

If it's sat around a lot (by the looks of the rat nest remains on the upper intake manifold, probably) you really need to do some maintenance. New belts (those look terrible), flush the brake fluid (it also looks terrible), drain and refill the coolant, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will make sure to get different belts and flush the brake fluid before driving it in spring. I already have Neo for the tranny and Amsoil for the diff.

I am surprised someone would go to the trouble of painting the plastic Y-pipe and do an AST yet there are no extra gauges inside (boost, A/F, ...). I would think if someone would do stuff like that, they would do some simple stuff like a boost gauge. Then again, who knows... maybe the stock AST cracked and leaked (I hope not) and they replaced it with an aftermarket one.

Yes, it is a 93 Touring. Also forgot to mention it has an aftermarket stereo that sounds horrible. Interior is black and is immaculate.

How can I tell if they upgraded more of the exhaust (downpipe? midpipe?)

That car must have sat for quite a while, quite a few of the clamps on.... Everything seem to be quite rusty...

Might be worth it to flush the coolant and oil too, unless recently done...

I would also suggest getting a new cover for the positive battery lead on the alternator, it seems to be chewed through...

You are also missing a clamp on the outlet of the intercooler coupler.

Has an aluminum AST, thats good

maybe they didn't install gauges because they didn't want to disturb the interior. If you plan to keep it in near stock condition I don't think you need gauges permanently installed. it's just more stuff to rattle

I've heard that some plastic pipes were painted silver from the factory on earlier model years, and others were painted black. It's possible the two silver-colored pipes on your car were that way when the car was new.


Most aftermarket downpipes can be seen from above, if you are at the correct angle... look down near the passenger's side of the engine bay, near the firewall. I agree the belts and pulleys look to be in rough shape. New belts aren't very expensive, it's a good idea to replace them before they break.

The y pipe came painted silver in 93, they were black in 94+
The AST is aftermarket, looks like a Pettit or a clone. Everything else aside from the strut bar looks to be OEM and mostly undisturbed. Hate to see some of the midwest rust, but there's not much you can do about that there. Even the nipple is still on the throttle body, so he probably never installed a boost gauge.

I agree with what someone else said, greddy/trust exhaust. An old one, but they're actually worth more than the newer ones.

Sucks about the stereo, the factory Bose unit actually sounds REALLY good when it works.

Also it has an R1 front spoiler on it.

you guys must be talking about the crossover tube that attaches to the y-pipe and then to the intercooler.

I have a bone stock 93 and my pipe is black..... not all 93's had the black crossover tube, some were painted silver.

Car looks relatively stock. Look under the front of the passenger side and see if the car has a catalytic converter on the first part of the exhaust coming from the turbos, or "downpipe".

the battery's disconnected too! so...if you can't start it...that would be why =)
