brittle means brittle, I pushed on the upper hose to move something else and it just broke. it HAD to break on a friday didn't it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1


So I shall order a shinny metal one from somewhere and get it here ASAP.


On a brighter note, by the time the new AST gets here I will have the rest of the car together.

It did you a favor breaking when it did, vs at 140 mph on the highway ;)

yeah, I actually laughed and said to myself "wow it is brittle" I had ordered an AST a long time ago, but the ebay place I was getting it from lost my order. but this time I'll get it

I have seen a polished aluminum one that someone was selling a while back. It was supposed to fit better than the Pettit ast. A search might bring it up. Thats the one I would buy.

haha yea those AST's and old coolant hoses reach a new level of brittle.

I've been fumbling around getting an aluminum AST (waiting for that killer deal in the FS section :tonque: ) but I think i'll put my order in to fighters in the near future :). Might end up getting their mini-battery kit too, but i'm not sure i'll need it anytime soon so maybe not.

i got one for you. two days ago i was changing my factory ast to an aluminum one i picked up. apparently me moving the hoses managed to crack one with out me noticing. i hooked everything up and everything seems great for five minutes or so. i go inside for a quick second to check my email and i hear the car turn off??? i run outside and all i see is steam poor out of the engine bay. hooray for me. luckily the car didnt over heat.

point of the story is, if your going to change your ast, might as well change all the coolant lines if you havent done so in a long while.

why not remove it... my car has been running fine w/out it for a while now...

No!!! The point is: Don't leave your car running when you are not there. That is ALWAYS a bad idea!!!!

I alwayss leave my car when its running...and i just deleted mine..Go get a filler neck cap off a 86-88 fc. It has an extra nipple that allows you to elminate the ast.

Do the AST removeal as many of us have done, and done so without any problems!

either way, changing your coolant lines is still a good idea. especially if you dont know if they have ever been changed.

If you're replacing your AST for reliability purposes I'd definetly recommend a brand new one, i bought a used Pettit and unknown to the seller (according to him) some of the welds around the cap had come loose. The used AST was actually worse off than the plastic one I was replacing. Probably a lone case, but the point is the aluminum ones aren't invulnerable either.

My second ast rattled off of the bracket on my ic (my fault, but still) and fell into my ps belt, got all chewed up, and broke the nipple off at VIR. Luckily I heard the clunking and came in right away before losing too much coolant.

Point is, I've decided to remove the point of failure entirely :)

I believe the filler cap is n/a fc, not sure if it matters. Ray will know which one you need :). Oh, and if you have a one piece filler neck, you can't use the AST delete without swapping out to a two-piece filler neck.

im just curious, anyone with 400 or more hp delete there ast? if so, any problems?

i gots the thinking and figured less crap in the engine department the better, but i just need to make sure its good to go for the higher hp.

btw, my aluminum ast was brand new and well secured in placed. just had old lines that were brittle. no damage, just got coolant all over the drive way.

anyone? 400+hp with deleted ast?

I have had no problems, been running this way for 3 years as a daily driver. I was doing a rad replacement and broke a nipple off the AST, then said F-it and did the fix on the robrobinette site.

i made a few ast tanks that i sold not too long ago for $150 but i have one with the coolant overflow nipple that was angled about 15-20 degrees clockwise too much (nipple aims toward the battery) if you are interested i'm asking $130 shipped.
