HP Rating of Intercooler...

I'm sorry if this is a really newbie question, but I was wondering if you took a stock intercooler out and placed it on another car how it would do? Is there a max boost or hp that I can have? Sorry for asking, but the searches I had didn't amount to much :)

Look at the new MS Miata. It looks like they just put new endtanks on the stock FD intercooler to run it as an FMIC, to me.

it would all depend on what kind of car you are putting it in. what the stock boost was with the old intercooler. b/c if you took a stock size intercooler out, and put a bigger one in it would drop you boost, due to the larger size.

it also depends on the flow of the engine.... if you are boosting a 4 rotor to say 8psi compared to a 2 rotor at 8psi, you would be flowing about twice as much air.... hmmm i think it would be better to know how much CFM the intercooler can flow (that would be a better gauge of what it can handle)... sorry i dont have that info though. but with the FD intercooler, there are other limitations since ma$dough cheaped out and used plastic endtanks. on the cosmo (predesessor to the FD engine confiuration) they had all metal FMIC's, but i guess they needed to cut costs for the FD (thats why we never got the abraidable seal like on the 99 twins... the regular ones were cheaper for hittachi to produce).

anyway, i think (depending on your application) you can "guess" if the FD IC will cut it. tell me what you are thinking of using it for?

i've been thinking the same thing recently since i have a crap load of unused FD parts in my garage. i have a miata which could use a few extra HP... and i figure since i have an extra set of twins, and extra IC, extra oil coolers, and an extra FD BOV.... why not adapt that to the miata. im about 1/4 of the way there at this point... i tore apart the twins, and i will be using just the primary for my turbo (i have a turbo manifold for the miata, and im making an adaptor plate to accept the primary exhaust inlet), ill make a DP and intercooler piping, use the FD intercooler (or my cosmo 20b IC) for a FMIC in the miata, the stock BOV should work just fine, and maybe ill even use my stock FD fuel pump in the miata instead of buying a new one. walla, instant (almost instant) turbo miata (all i need to buy is a rasing rate FPR, and a litte computer thing for 200 that the miata guys use for timing retard). oh yeah, ill need some sort of boost controller as well.

wow, sorry i just kinda went off hehe  .... tell me about the application you are thinking of! -heath
