Hows best to run-in a rebuilt single turbo eng

What's the best method of running in a newly rebuilt engine? i.e. revs, oil, how many miles, how many miles to keep the boost off etc?
Cheers
Steve

Well this info is all over the fourm but i will do the work for you

This is just me but it is pretty close to everyone.

Frist 500 miles 3K Redline, No boost

500-1000 Miles Change oil, Slowly raise redline from 3K to 8K by 1K miles. Increase the boost slowly until 1K miles then Change oil one more time.

At this point it is ok to do normal driving with some boosting.

If you want the motor to last the Longest possible instead of 1K for the finish take it to 2K

Agian this is just how i do mine rebuilds

I would say 5000miles or so others might suggest less... if you stay off boost the whole time, the engine will be more reliable... so stay off boost.

Rx7_Nut13B 04-18-07 04:46 AM

I could see 5K if the motor was Brand new

I agree the longer you stay off the boost the better.

I no that i boosted my a few time before 1K :( but i have low will-power

Thanks for the info guys, the reason i asked the engine builder supplied the following info, and to be honest it just seemed a bit of a sudden jump re the increase in revs etc.

Quote;
0-100 mls, KEEP BELOW 5000RPM avoid high boost
100-200mls KEEP BELOW 6000RPM """"""""""""""""""
200-500mls FULL RPM range available avoid high boost

Do you have a pfc. If you do, you can set the max rpm.

5000 miles is fricking ludicrous.

0-500 4k redline, light boost on primary (it's impossible not to boost on seq twins), change oil
500-1000: slowly increase redline, short bursts of WOT only
1000+: let her rip

Yes

It's also good to note that heat cycling is important so don't try to accomplish your break-in overnight! ;)

LOL. I dont drive 2500 miles/year. Rynbergs numbers sounds right. Thats what i was told from a swedish rotary engine builder.

so from 500-1000 i can boost all the way up? and what is WOT? :)

NissanConvert 04-19-07 06:07 AM

Wide Open Throttle. From 500-1k you shouldn't be doing long or frequent WOT runs.

10 psi for short bursts....below the "redline"

shawnk 04-19-07 11:38 AM

I heard from some reputable builders the only time to really be concerned is if you replace the bearings or rotors (and that seems to make sense to me). Otherwise only a very short breakin period is required.

Personally I am more aggressive than even the engine builders listing above. It would be hard to point to breakin period for issues down the road and therefore eveyone is overly conservative.

Heck if I get 20K at 18psi I will be extremely happy.

I've always subscribed to this theory in my piston cars and motorcycles and have found it to work quite well.

I'm curious if anyone has tried a similar break in for a rotary this way?
