How to shoot flames?

I was wondering how people with REX's shoot flames I know that a large single turbo with no cat will do it.
If I have 99 spec turbo's with a catco cat and a racing beat dual cat back will it be possible.Or will I have to put on a m/p?

Gamezilla 09-07-04 11:35 PM

You need a free flowing exhaust (so no cats). Thats really it honostly. If you're looking for the 1 foot flames then you'll need an aftermarket ecu so you can richen up your mixture a bit. That'll help some. I dont see the point. Burns the bumper and cops pull you over because they have no idea what your car just did.

radiantRX-7 09-07-04 11:59 PM

So if your shooting flames but have a cat on, doesnt it burn it up?Or doent the flames shoot back up through the d/p? into the turbo.Wouldnt it be better if there is a m/p on?

skunks 09-08-04 12:02 AM

i doubt you will beable to throw any flames with that cat but then again, i have heard of cars with cats throwing blue flames at idle.

ROTORhead93 09-08-04 12:10 AM

cant people with hi flow cats on still shoot flames after WOT runs? I've always heard of that happening.

Black97VR4 09-08-04 12:13 AM

Whats up with shooting flames? My car does it but so what?

radiantRX-7 09-08-04 12:14 AM

Now you guys got me wondering if I need a c/f plate on my bumper.I dont think Ive ever shot flames though never really checked.

Toadman 09-08-04 12:18 AM

Yes you can shoot flames with a stock cat, DP, stock ECU and a cat-back even. Not intentionally by design or planning in my case, but yes. Mainly on decel from high rpm lifting off full throttle when the mix is still rich. ;)

GoodfellaFD3S 09-08-04 12:22 AM

I've shot flames before with a high flow cat installed. It's much easier with a midpipe, though :D

nice, rich running ECU (lovin my Pettit) and mp....it's beautiful....terrifies rice kids with rap music

*wipes sentimental tear from eye*

What are some of the pro/con's of running m/p?? I have one but never installed it.I heard of bad boost spikes.Im running a PFC.

Gamezilla 09-08-04 09:18 AM

Im running a resonated MP, HKS DP, and RB exhaust. No boost creep at all. Car is non-sequential, so at about 4k the boost spikes to 10.5psi for less than a second, the drops right to 10.

Best way to get flames are riding it all the way to redline with 100% throttle, then completely letting off and leaving it in gear still. Thats pretty much the only time mine flames. I dont see the point though. I guess its kinda cool, but it just turns my tips black.

i think blue means its lean so that means the cat is burning up most of the crap but some stuff still comes out and is hot enough to burn...?

Not spiking, but creeping. All FDs respond differently to a midpipe, but you risk uncontrollable boost creep as rpms increase. There is too much flow for the factory wastegate, and it can't divert all the exhaust gases away from the turbine. Honestly, you're prolly better off not installing it. You would def need some tuning after installing the sucker.

DP+MP+CB=Flames

Bob_760 09-08-04 11:25 AM

I have a downpipe, stock cat (i think, if its not stock its nothing special), and pfs cat-back and NO other mods, my car shoots flames anytime i redline and let off (free rev or between shifts while driving)

What is that hose for on your muffler?

badinfluencemp 09-08-04 01:18 PM

imma sound like a dumb ass what the fuck is m/p pfc and all that stuff short for

John Magnuson 09-08-04 01:57 PM

lol... that's a spark plug and spark plug wire. Not a hose. It's to make sure that any gas coming out the exhaust lights on fire... guess that guy really likes to put on a show.

Herblenny 09-08-04 02:12 PM

Thats awesome guys.. I want to throw 3 ft flames just like the movie that came out with supra, rx7,s2000, and some nissan i've never heard of.. and go down to florida and try to jump over a bridge.. I guess thats "in" thing to do??

I'll be happy to answer that...
M/P = Mid pipe (straight pipe to replace the stock main cat)
PFC = Apexi Power FC (stand alone computer, fully programable, replaces stock ECU)

blueskaterboy 09-08-04 02:40 PM

The spark plug thing is AWESOME AHAHAHa

usually on this forum anything with a (/p) stands for a pipe, ie d/p downpipe, m/p midpipe, t/p test pipe, ect. pfc is short for the aftermarket ecu sold by apexi- power fuel computer.

AH ha ha ha ha ha!

Its a cult thing, really though, it shouldn't be dawged especially because didn't Rx7club.com promote that in a bad ass video made in Korea, and almost every single rx7 practicing the art of throwing flames and fireballs.

They make a propane kit that you attach to your exhuast that will shoot flames. It is not street legal but who cares.
