how to remove exhaust?

hey, i know this is a really simple question but please cut me some slack and give a quick answer... i have to do this now

im trying to pull my exhaust (ive never done it before) and what wondering how you get hte exhaust off of the hangers? there are no bolts or anything... can someone give me a few pointers on how to remove it... my only exhaust experience is with a 67 MGB and there were bolts that attached the exhaust to the hangers

sorry for the totally newb question... i just need to get this thing off fast and dont have too much time... thanks a bunch, heath

BMike 03-19-04 01:31 PM

like, you unbolted everything and just need to get it out of the hangers?

Yank hard...lol...the hanger is just a straight piece of metal with a little "ball" that is slightly larger than the hole in the rubber hanger. You just yank the ball back through the rubber and yer done. They make a sweet tool for this, but its not necessary really...

Try using some WD-40 in the holes of the rubber around the rod to get it to slide off.

saxyman990 03-19-04 01:36 PM

Yeah, PB Blaster works great for this too.

RotorMotor 03-19-04 01:40 PM

ok thats what i was looking for... super! sorry for the stupid questions, i just didnt want to ruin anything by forcing it. i did suspect (like many things on the FD) that if you pull hard enough it will come off  when i get this thing off ill take some pictures because im having a hard time identifying this particular exhaust

spurvo 03-19-04 01:40 PM

Try twisting the rubber as you pull as well. Basically, you are trying to break the friction between the ball end listed above and the rubber. I had some trouble when I replaced my cat back as well, but twisting and just plain pulling (I had my foot on the wheel at one point!) will get you there!

Stick a flathead screwdriver in the hole, from the side that has the larger "ball thing" in it. This gives the rubber hanger something to slide up and over the ball on, works just fine for me.

ok i just tryed the "pull alot and swear for an hour" method, and i dont recomend it! now my thumbs hurt :( im a wuss.... anyway, the cat and the catback have been removed from my project car and are on their way into the other FD to hopefully solve my "red hot turbos all the time" problem...

so i have 2 more questions: before i put the cat on is there any way for me to check if its clogged or not?

also, im not sure that i recognize the catback that i just pulled off. it looks somewhat old... ill post some pics in a few minutes, and hopefully someone can identify it, and tell me something about it (in regards to sound/ sound level/ any expected performance gains)

Hey Rotor Motor, what part of the bay area are you from, because I'm also from the bay area. Good to see another FD owner.

BMike 03-19-04 03:36 PM

Does the car in question still have a stock DP? If so my money's on your DP cat being clogged. If not, you should be able to see a strong light shined through the cat, it has kind of a honey comb, if you cant see anything through it with a flashlight or the like shoved in from one end you probably have blockage.

can anyone verify that this is indeed a COSMO pump, and not some other DENSO pump?? the number on it is: 195130-0771 .... for all i know it could be a used FD pump, or a supra pump, or any other number of denso pumps :)

RotorMotor 03-19-04 04:13 PM

ok sorry for the digression... back to the exhaust. ok here's some FD trivia: can anyone identify this catback? (because i cant :p: )

Raziel 03-19-04 06:33 PM

maybe a stock catback w/ a diffrent tip?

RotorMotor 03-19-04 06:50 PM

no its 3"

MakoRacing 03-19-04 06:59 PM

hmmm

RotorMotor 03-19-04 07:49 PM

is the CB an M2 unit possibly?

also, im not seeing a honeycomb as was described for the cat?

BMike 03-19-04 10:16 PM

Same PN as the cosmo pump I have here, it says 12T 01 next to denso and has the same numbers below that..

RotorMotor 03-19-04 10:59 PM

i wonder what the numbers on the side signify? anyway, thanks so much for the verification.

so does ANYONE know what C.B. this is... its finally om my car, and im going outside to start her up... ill let you know what i think

RotorMotor 03-20-04 01:03 AM

ok well i took it our for a drive... this CB is not too loud at all... but gives a good rumble downlow. really, i must say, that i couldnt detect any significant performance gains using my butt-meter. the turbos werent as red as before but (and this is really weird) i looked down the exhaust after a cruise, and the inside was glowing red. also, with the stock exhaust the turbo response felt much more crisp (after i put this CB on the throttle felt "mushy" to me and turbo response was not as great as before). also, i seem to have lost the sharp turbo transition @ 4.5k rpm like i had before. im not sure i like the DP and the catback, as everything now feels mushy and not responsive. oh yeah one last thing... the black valence under my bumper looks like its starting to melt from the heat from the exhaust tips... im less than pleased with the upgrades
