How to reduce the temperature?
My car temp reads a little over the middle in the summer time, I hope this is normal, and what can i do to reduce some heat from the engine bay??

The needle should stay just under center on the temp guage, sounds like youre car is running hot.Check youre coolant level and make sure and remove all air from the cooling system, flush the rad if it hasnt been done yet, install a new thermostat if you havent recently.I also would install a aftermarket temp guage because the stock guage sucks, with a aftermarket guage you will see fans turn on low speed at 230F with the stock guage reading normal so you are running hotter than that thats not good.Best cooling upgrade is to install the Miata 207F thermoswitch fans will kick on 23F sooner will help motor run cooler and live longer.

In addition to the above, use more water in your coolant. Water conducts heat much better than antifreeze.

if you make airdams, it will channel all the air thru your radiator, also running about 15-20% coolant will help too but you gotta watch your temp because it will boil over faster. It cooled my temp down from 200 to about 180 degrees.
BTW: Get a temp gauge (even an autometer one will do), the stock one does not really work too well and by the time you see it start moving, its a little too late... |
the biggest way to keep the temps down is running more water than coolant like skunks has stated it is a sure fire way to cool it down a bit:)

Always run at least 20% antifreeze (1part AF to 4parts Water) because if you run any less than that you loose the anti-corrosion and lubrication benifits of the AF - the #1 killer of Rotary engines is COOLANT SEAL FAILURE - and the #1 cause of seal failures is Corrosion of the groove the seal sits in.

So by adding more water to the rad, will it be over heat very easily since the car is so hot??

First and foremost get an accurate temperature gauge. Anyone who is concerned about FD engine temperatures and is relying exclusively on the stock temperature gauge just doesn't understand the FD. Either linearize the stock gauge, install an aftermarket gauge, or get a PFC with commander.
Second, the solution to a high temperature/overheating engine has nothing to do with reducing engine bay temperatures as you originally posted. You need to find out what is causing your engine to reach higher than normal temperatures and correct the problem(s) and/or just improve your engine cooling abilities. The fan mod which allows you to turn on the radiator fans at any time plus a larger radiator (Koyo or Fluididyne) just flat makes sense for all FDs. |
Another thing you might wanna try is to turn on your A/C to heater mode, it does drop the temp by about 5-10 degrees! I would and have used it for those times you get over 210 degrees.
You might not wanna go overboard on the cooling. Remember, if you don't get to about 180 degrees F. you will not get out of warm up mode! BTW: I suggest you turn you fans on to at least the low setting when ever you drive unless you drive in very cold/Sub-Zero weather |
how many settigns do each of the fans have and how do u control those settings, also how would i rewire the ac fan to be activated by the swtich witout hacking up the wiring?
