How Much Should it cost to Rebuild??
 

my fd died the other day......after further review it was found to have very little compression in the rear rotor.......a reputible rx7 specialist in Calgary Ab. quoted me seven thousand canadian bucks to fix it (approx 6500 us).......this would include 3mm apex seals and some porting comparible to a street port engine aswell as replacing the front rotor case.........is this to much CASH.....what should i do?????

not sure what a front rotor case is, but if its a housing...replace the rear too.

"To fix the engine" might mean all he has to do is go in and replace a couple of side seals to restore compression. Add porting and a housing and it might be a high price. On the other hand, if he goes through it with a complete Mazda rebuild kit including all seals and gaskets, and does the other work, then that's a different story and he is probaby reasonable. I think you should ask for a little more info and get a quote from him in writing as to what parts and kits he will use for the rebuild. Also search through some of the rebuild threads and see what is required to create a reliable rebuild. Also, look at Atkins Rotary or Rotary Resurrection's websites. They offer the basic services or supplies that are needed for good work. It will make you more knowledgable about what is involved and know what questions to ask. One other point, no rebuilder should be giving you an absolute firm quote, unless he's got a substantial markup included. If both housings were out of spec and maybe a rotar would have to be replaced, too, it would eat up his profit margin. You don't really know what's involved until you open an engine up and run calipers across all surfaces tp determine what can be reused.

6500 US doesn't make any sense. Parts for a rebuild are what 1300, that would mean 5200 in labor which theres no way. I would forsee closer to 3k.

It's those magic 3mm Apex seals and the special lubing.

Sean: I'm not so sure anyone can do a complete rebuild with the Mazda kit, replace a couple major parts and do a street port and come in at $3,000 and stay in business. Good basic rebuilds of the shortblock alone with no major parts will run about $2,400. Installation, new major parts, porting and tuning is always extra. $3,500 to $4,000 would be a good price for this level of work in the U.S. at most reputable shops. I can recall a lot of posts by other members that their bill hovered at $5,000. He's probably a little high priced, but I'd want what he's doing in writing, to the O-ring.

You are correct, parts for a rebuild are ~1300, but if you add new rotor housings into the equation you're suddenly looking at ~2600, which is about the cost of a reman motor, take your pick. 22 hrs book rate labor, at 75 an hour is 1650. 500 or so to streetport the engine (intake and exhaust) and suddenly you're up to $4750.

Add in incidentals for shop supplies, other engine bay parts gaskets/crush washers/o rings etc and the price climbs above 5k pretty quickly. Add in 3-400 to mill rotors for 3mm apex seals if that's your thing, you're in the mid 5s. I'm not defending this shop in canada, i know nothing about them, but $6500 parts and labor out the door for a proper 3mm streetported reman motor, with *all* oem small parts (as above, gaskets etc) sounds about right.

Well personally what I would do is put your engine on a pallet rent a truck and take a trip to Oregon, your not that far.

If it were my car, depending on the damage, I could rebuild for less than 800.00 n(hell maybe even lower). Not everything in these engines always needs replacing considering the internals are good for over 200k+. For some reason people always replace things that are still well within spec. :rolleyes:

I am to busy or i would offer to put in a motor i have ready to go.
