How much oil?

How much oil do I need to put in? Im flushing, and puttin on a new oil filter.

yuichiror 09-16-06 03:25 PM

Four quarts.

Oh, an R1 might need a bit more.

adam c 09-16-06 03:32 PM

Start by filling with 3 quarts. Start the engine, and let in run for a minute. Turn off engine, wait 2 minutes, and check level. Add oil until it reaches the top of the scale on dipstick. Adding 4 quarts may overfill, which isn't good.

should i run with the old oil filter? then once it fills up on the dip stick replace the filter?

PhDMDRX7 09-16-06 03:48 PM

NO, why run clean oil through a dirty filter? My car uses 4+ quarts and I change the oil and filter every 2000 miles. Since the filter is inverted it's almost always fully drained when I change it anyway.

I'll usually give it (the oil filter) a little 1/3 turn while I'm draining the old oil. This makes it much easier to drain the filter completely. :)

That is a good tip Natey!

Never run new oil thru an old filter. Always change filter before starting an engine with new oil.

sevensix 09-16-06 04:38 PM

i've always started with 4 quarts but that ends up ~3/4 up on the dipstick.

what happens when overfilled :)

Errr, I think it's pretty easy to reach. Are you thinking of the fuel filter?

I've never had a problem reaching the filter in the stock location. I personally think it's in a great place. My beater S10 pickup's filter is much harder to get to.

KeloidJonesJr. 09-16-06 04:58 PM

You can premix, too.

DMoneyRX-7 09-16-06 05:34 PM

ok i changed it. thanks guys

preludesh2000 09-16-06 09:05 PM

my prelude's filter is in the same spot, just with a little less room...
i also used 4 quarts and it was perfect...
