how much to offer for a fd
 

i found this mint 1994 with 71k on the original motor, its mint inside and out, clean title, i drove it and it seems to boost nicely, didnt have a boost gauge but i did that test when your in third gear and at like 40mph and count to 70 and it was like 5 secs or under. there seems to be no problems what so ever but ill still get it checked out if i do buy the car. my only concern is the engine and turbos. the guy has taken car of the car and always garaged . if say the engine is about to go shortly can u like rebuild it before it blows up?? if u can how much will it cost. also the car is stock. i have pics but i want to know how much to offer him. hes selling for around 16k.i have pic but dont know how to post

What model is it? Base, touring, pep, R-2. Tourings are worth more than bases. As are R-2's. Stock or modded?
Mint is mint, hard to argue with that.

$16k seems pretty fair. You might see if he'll part with the 7 for $15k. Get a compression check done on the motor and verify the boost. My father lives in Morristown NJ and owns a 93 R1 and knows quite a bit about FDs. I wish I was in NJ right now to check her out for you, but I'm still stuck in Iraq :).

well the car isnt in nj lest not this one its more south but probly closer to i then me cause im in south jersey near ocean city. the car is a touring

regardless if the engine is running ok. there is still the chance that it could go in the near future after you purchase it. i was driving a 94 with 75000 miles on it and the engine went just like that. all i was doing was some minor work to it at the time. so you never know, just keep it in mind. the cost of an engine job could run from 3000 to 8000 depending if you are doing the job yourself or having a good shop do it, and if you have to replace or rebuild the turbos. i also have a customer of mine that had 135000 miles on the engine before i replaced it.

is there a way u can tell its gonna blow soon? also can u just go out and get it rebuilt for like 2k or so and streetported to make sure it wont blow on u when your not lookin?

yes a rebiult cost around 2200. but when the motor out you will be replacing other things. clutch, all vacume lines, gaskets, hoses, maybe belts, plugs, wires, ect. that why i said 3000 and up. the rebuilt engine has a 12/12 or 24/24 warenty in most cases. the motor you take out has to be given back as a core also.

when you purchase an engine they want your old one back as a core if you choose to keep it they charge you another 1000.

i found a few just that i dontr know which to buy im stuck on this 71k one and then there this 35k miles fd but for 20k and i cant spend that much

I doubt its perfectly mint, but if it appears cosmetically mint and drives nicely, then it sounds like a good deal. Also, check underneath it for leaks. If you can find a FD with absolutely no leaks and is perfectly clean underneath, thats a big plus in my book.
