how much horsepower increase when removing air conditioner??
I was wondering how hard it is to remove the air conditioner and how much horsepower will increase with the removal of it
|
It is easy to remove the AC, just takes some time, like 20 minutes. But what kind of belt are you going to run to keep your powersteering?
HP gain? not that much IMO. It saves some weight, but I like cold air when it is hot outside. thesaint |
When the air conditioner is turned off, the compressor is just freewheeling so you'll basically gain nothing. The main reason for removal is to increase airflow to the radiator and remove some of the clutter inside the engine bay.

wow, i never heard of someone being alergic to a/c. that sucks man.
|
yep  i like the heat anyways. i HATE being cold.

Can the air condenser be moved to a more flat position to allow more air to hit the radiator directly. Anyone do this?

don't do it...the fd is like an oven...it's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes :D ok i'm bored

Originally posted by jspecracer7 yep. Before I took my AC out, I was planning on putting the ac condenser parallel with the ground, underneath the radiator/intercooler. I've seen it done on a few cars now. |

Can you email or post or pm me how you did this, any tips or tricks to watch out for? Thanks! Your help is very appreciated! |
With the apexi fmic, and others you have to relocate your condensor. With a intercooler kit you have all the approriate brackets and so fourth to make the move easy. I'm sure it can be done without a fmic, it would just take some time to figure out and a few trips to the hardware store. Anyways, unfortunatly putting the condensor on the bottom of the car parallel with the ground doesn't allow much air flow and makes the ac work poorly. However you can easily fit a fan on the condenser without worrying about it getting ripped off over speed bumps or whatever. All you have to do is splice into the existing fan wires to make the fan work. In my case I have my radiator fans working through the haltach, they come on at 180 and shut off at 175, very cool feature. So since I still have the stock fan connectors available, I simply took my stock radiator fan connector, cut one off and spliced it into a fan I bought at auto-zone. So now anytime I want ac, I just hit the button like normal and the fan comes on and i'm cool and happy.
|
Oh yeah, I used both stock connectors and spliced into a single 12" fan. It makes it "zing" its spinning so fast.
|
You'll gain as much horsepower from removing the a/c as you will from just setting the switch to "off".
|
I live in MN right now and took out my condeser so I could get better flow to the radiator. Now I'm moving to FL in 10 days, I hope I can bare the heat. just have to have the windows down lots.

If you want to lose 50 or so horsepower just push that little AC button.

Was it necessary to remove the refigerant to move things around or did everything bend fine? If its too much hassle, I may just remove it all. Thanks again! |

The A/C uses about 10hp when cycling....not that much, really.

evot23,
Yeah I did this too - lowered the condensor flat that is; Perhpas the following will help you visualize what I did. http://www.negative-camber.org/crispyrx7/cwric3.htm Regards, Crispy |
From what I have read it appears to be easier to add an additional fan than move the condenser. Is this also more effective in keeping cool?

I removed mine cuz i dont use it anyways. It saved some weight too. The FD is actually set up to have the perfect airflow through the cock pit with the driver side window down and the sun roof cracked open. Its perfect and you dont lose power from running the AC. Try it if you dont believe me and drive at ruffly 30 or 40 miles an hour. I actually believe this was stated in one fo the car magazines about 10 or 11 years ago.
|
I never even use mine... I feel like I'm hurting my FD. I might as well take it out. It gets hot as shit, though :D.
|
dont do it .. it gets mad hot in there during tha summer
|
Unless your car is ripped apart its going to take more then 20mins...if you want to completely remove everything, the nuts by the firewall are a bitch to get at
|
i hate to bring back an old topic from the grave but can anyone post how removing the AC is done?
|
I thought about removing mine but it works perfect and blows super cold... I decided to keep it in since it's not doing any harm
|
I used it so rarely so I removed all a/c stuff under the hood, including the a/c "motor." It probably only takes 2 hp to spin the thing, but removing all the under-hood a/c stuff removes about 15 lbs from the front of the car and allows a little more ambient air to circulate around the motor itself. However with the a/c on, the power loss is noticeable and definitely more then just a couple hp.
But if you drive in areas that do get hot more than just a few times a year, I'd recommend just keeping the a/c intact. |

|
do you just remove the condensor, dehydrator and air pump?
|
i removed everything in the ac systems also remover thr p/s and got a manual rack looks alot cleaner under the hood. since i only drive my fd on the weekends it dont bother me to not have a/c or p/s but if it was my DD then idk if would of removed all them.
|
can someone point me to HOW??? i really appreciate the opinions but i would like to know HOW this is done. HOW do you remove the A/C unit and everything? She is going to be my weekend warrior and i live in San Diego so the weather is pretty much perfect most of the time.

Might want to check the FSM for that |
and don't let anyone see you venting R12 freon into the atmosphere.. i'm pretty sure that the EPA would love to throw you in jail if they saw you doing it. i'm sure there is some shops that will evacuate the system for free since R12 is valued close to it's weight in gold mainly because it's an uncommon freon these days so they charge more for it.
granted most of these systems are bone dry by now anyways.. as to answer the original question, you lose a fraction of 1% of your horsepower, netting you maybe .5WHP more(yes, half of one horsepower) when the a/c is turned off. |

Remove the belt Remove the condensor..the piece down under the radiator Remove the lines...they are just held in with screw clamps Unbolt the compressor and remove it...it is on the driver side of the engine near the ps pump Keep the blower under the dash incase the next owner wants to reinstall it. |
^^^ That!
Dont go so far that you make the car impossible to sell if you ever need to. |
doesn't the a/c automatically disengages the compressor at full throttle? so basically no power gains taking it out... when mine had 315whp my best time of 12.8@110 on street tires was with the a/c on!
|
Pretty much all cars disengage AC at WOT AFIK.
The only performance advantage would be from the ~20lb weight loss. |
Its a pain when shopping for an FD these days, they either got the AC ripped out, PS ripped out, or both. Kids.
I have two FDs, and one was gutted like that, I had to put everything back in =( I must be getting old. My current runner is bridgeported with a single turbo, it has AC and PS, nothing like the creature comforts while being able to whoop some ass at the same time. Everything I've done to it is reversable as well since I have a stock engine sittin nearby. |

I've been on other people's cars (not FD's) where they have no AC, no PS, gutted, with the ride so hard that you feel like your teeth are going to fall out. To make it ever worse they didn't even track the car. All of those people sold their shit within 2 years and they all said the same thing: "I got tired of it" |
