How much "abuse" can an auto take???
Haven't decided if I'll buy an auto or a manual 3G. Realize the differences in acceleration between those. Will an auto-box survive track-days if the car has in the region of 300 rear whp? Is a change to a 4.1 or even a 4.3 diff very noticeable? (In a "better" way, or are there any major drawbacks???)

I think you'll be fine around with those numbers. However if you start getting the 'need for speed' and wanting to go above 300 rwhp, I think you'll be at the problem area for the stock auto tranny.
I think you'll find a huge benefit going to the 4.1 gears but , IMO, I wouldn't recommend 4.3s for the auto. |
Thanx :icon_tup:

Get an Auto...Go single with a Microtech 1,000.00 build the tranny 3700.00 from level 10, Stage 3. Then tune it to 500-600 rwhp
And you be fine! |
Track day as in road course or drag strip? WTF wants an auto on a road course!?!?!?
|
Lazy people. :) Or ones who don't know the benefits of the manual transmission on a track or any driving environment for that matter. I think the only time Auto would be good is in San Francisco cause those hills are practically vertical. :)

4.3 gears work great with the auto trans.

I'm looking for a daily driver that I perhaps will take to a road course once in a while, so I'm not looking for an all-out race car. I have several sports cars with stick shift, but am not used to having one with an automatic trans, hence my question. Here in Europe, we grow up with manual transmissions, and after 25 years of stick-shift, perhaps it's time to at least try something else.
My experience is that the only time I really enjoy shifting is at the track. If I didn't have any concerns, I wouldn't ask this excellent forum! :) |
I really like my auto, but....I wouldn't auto-X it necessarily. I've learned "mad skills" over the years with my automatic and have confidence I can outperform 50% of the manual FD owners out there, but it IS a learned skill, and even in skilled hands such as mine, it almost would take too much concentration to consistently hit shifting/braking/acceleration points using the auto.

Hmmm, valuable info...which means that I'm (again) looking for an FD RX-7 with a manual trans...or...

IF you are mainly going to daily drive the car and only occasionally (if ever...a lot of us would LIKE to take our cars to the track, but few really ever do...) race it, then an auto would do just fine with 300 rwhp or so. Much more than that and you have to start really building up the tranny, as mentioned before Level 10 made a bullet-proof unit but it was high-dollar.
If you really prefer a manual, I would wait and buy a manual rather than try to do a conversion, personally. |
