How many of you removed the OMP?
 

I ask because I'm STILL trying to diagnose my excessive oil smoking.. It's intermittent and strange, and I'd like to rule out a stuck, or malfunctioning OMP.

I have the pump unplugged, however it is to my understanding that it still functions *somewhat* while unplugged..

My motor has been rebuilt at 65K and has no driven miles on the rebuild, but several warmups and revving sessions..

I've read and read and read and read about this crap and am getting more lost the more I read. SO.. WTF? Why the smoke? I never saw symptoms of bad oil seals.. Car never smoked at high RPMS when shifting... never smoked anywhere other than startup.. Was always oil.. just for a few seconds during warm up then would go away.. One day I started it and it just never stopped smoking. Oil was leaking from the manifold and I decided it was time to tear down.. I never really diagnosed the problem to begin with (Might be the damn problem) but I always thought the turbos had died.. Well, with the new motor and everything, the car STILL smokes. And occasionally has drips from the manifold.

return = good

The only 2 things I can imagine it being is the OMP or the motor..

How many people have removed the OMP? It's pretty much just a remove and blockoff thing, right?

I'd like to try it to see if it remedies the smoking... That way I can determine if its yank time for the good ol rotary..

go into detail the way you are venting your crankcase (i.e, did you try to eliminate your PCV valve, are you running a catch can, stock system, etc)

umm why dont you take off the OMP lines running to the top of the motor and then you can see if its pouring out oil when you start it up??

PCV is still there, however the bottom nipple from the filler neck goes to a vented catch can.. :)

to block the MOP itself, its 3 bolts right in the open. to remove the lines from the squirters he will have to take the extention manifold off, unbolthe primary rail and the reassemble. the 5 minutes it would take (especialy since being single and nothing covering it) would sound like the logical approach to me. but you are right is seeing how much actualy "comes out" of the lines. :)

I plan on doing just that.. Figured before I start tearing into shit I'd have a little discussion about it. Makes me feel better when I ask. :D

or you can pull the vaccum lines to the OMP, if it still smokes, it's either a bad injector, or something besides your OMP system

Yeah... That's where I'm scared.. They are vented to the atmosphere. The problem was there when they were correctly connected in the sequential system as well, so I'm a LITTLE worried.

so just remove them, block the OMP off, call it a day

hopefully it's not your control rings, is your motor ported, who did the work, do you trust them?

Yeah.. That's the plan.

I hope it's not the control rings too.. but it's starting to feel like it. Motor is ported. Had a friend build it, but I trust them.

I'll be EXTREMELY pissed if the motor needs to be torn down again (seeing as I haven't driven the car in over a year.. But I guess I could repaint it AGAIN! lol

well, he might have ported into the control ring path..just a thought, or you might have blow by-

you could always lap the irons if the ports are o-k, that would eliminate that possibility

Thanks for the input. I don't think it's the ports, as it smoked like this before the rebuild.. I figured it's either the OMP or the rings are bad.. :(

Whats your turbo setup and have you been running the same turbo since the smoke started? Could it be the turbo?

I dont run a omp. The way I eliminated it was by putting it off the side of the engine and replacing it with a "cover". Then I pulled out the injectors and replaced them with bolts

Setup is a To4R. -4 feed, -12 return. It smoked before, but I *thought* the stockers went.. Turns out it's something else. Where did you get the block off plate for the OMP? :)

I made it lol

Its easy to make, I just got some thin alum sheet metal, layed the omp on it and trace it out then drilled some bolt holes. Then I used some Permatex ultra grey for sealant. It makes the engine bay look sooo much better.

i have the same problem myself! the car smokes slightly at idle, the exhaust smells like fuel and a nasty leak from the manifold which is consistent will oil. i traced the leak up to where the manifold meets the turbos and it ends there. the drains all have new gaskets and look dry from underneath the car, but i haven't removed the y-pipe to check the oil feeds for a leak.

Do you know if there is any shaft play? How many miles? Mine blew a little oil.. But now with the new motor and turbos it's getting frustrating!

actually i bought them off someone. they had no shaft play, just minor cracking on the manifold. maybe the turbos are leaking oil on the exhaust side, i have seen that before!

You sure its not the oil feed line to the turbo? This is good, your car can be the guinie (sp?) pig seeing I have pretty much the same set up as you ;)
