How many Fd Auto owners use Hold button?
I own a '93 touring - automatic. Wondering how many other AT owners use the HOLD button and what there thoughts are on the feature. I really just discovered the feature. If it's going to cause me headaches, like ruin the transmission, I don't want to use it.

Its there to be used.... I used it until I swapped...

USE IT -
I use my Auto FD for Track days and the HOLD mod really works well on the track - allows you to use 1st-3rd gear like a manual but w/o the clutch, Can you say LEFT FOOT BRAKING? also unless you shift down to L or use LOTS of throttle (3/4+) pulling away from a stop, the auto will want to start out in 2nd gear. |
Proper use of the HOLD feature is essential to spirited performance. When used to its optimum effect, it makes the car damned near like a manual-tranny version.
Without it, you will often find yourself just having to mash the gas to really get things moving (which is fun in itself!) It also works as a great form of traction control in very slick conditions, as it will force the car to start out in 3rd gear if the selector is in 'D'. Around the neighborhood I will often keep the car in first gear using the hold with the selector in 'L', this locks the torque converter and really makes the car act more "manual" like. |
is it bad for the tranny to use the hold feature all the time?
|
depending how fast you are going, using the hold feature in low gear could overheat the transmission fluid. still, i use the hold feature during in town and spirited driving. i've had the car for 7 years and it hasn't hurt my tranny.....................yet. just make sure you obey service milestones and you'd should be fine.
|
if it was hard on the tranny mazda wouldn't have put it there. what is hard is all the upgrades we put on there after the fact.
|
BTW I haven't had a hold feature for over a year now since I run the PFC. Usually I stay in L or 2. 2 is good to 125-130 or so.
|
When I'm going down a bridge I press the hold button to put me into 3rd ratio and slow me down instead of riding my brakes. The HOLD button disables overdrive.

Hmmm...nickname is rx7racer and used the hold button for downshifts, but really didn't abuse it? How many miles did you have on the car? Maybe you got a lemon.;)

mine went out at around 53K, after PFC, greddy IC, apex intake, catback.

Weak Link:
Hey man with all those mods you have done to your car is your transmission holding all that power? and a question to all the other automatic rx7 people when you go into forth (taking hold off at the top of 3rd) does your car almost seem like that power you had going from 0-130 is not there |
i've got 87,xxx miles on my 93' with the original transmission , hardly ever use the hold button. My tranny seems to feel like its still in pretty good shape though. The only time I use the hold button is when i get bored.

WOW that's an old thread! :)
I'm not too up on automatics, but it is a topic that's been covered a lot. Pull up Google and put in - flashing hold light site:rx7club.com You'll find a ton of threads covering that topic. Dale |
