how to make a quick release bumper?
 

so i work on my car quiet often and take off the front bumper frequently. it is rather a PITA so i was thinking of making it a quick release some how. the only way ive see it is the latches/hinges the drifters use but is there any other way to make it a little cleaner? i plan on leaving the top 4 bolts in the middle and making the sides a quick release... any ideas?:scratch:

I almost never have to remove the front bumper and I work on my car all the time.

just put zip ties where bolts would usually be. works perfectly. I just rip the bumper off then put on new ties when im done.

Ive got an iffy hood latch, so it opens when it feels like it so being able to take off the bumper to get to the hood latch mechanism is a big help sometimes.

So replace the latch and release cable :lol: OR use hood pins.

Weird, I work on my FD (and other FDs) all the time and somehow am able to leave the bumper in place 99% of the time. Maybe I'm doing it wrong :lol:

hahah in an ideal world... but in this one im poor.

I can see the usefulness of it in the right circumstances.

Currently my FD has a heavy duty CF splitter on it. It attaches to the subframe and to the chassis tie down mount points. It is a very solid mount, as recent testing on a bumpy autox proved.

Removing the headlights (not pop-ups) is no big deal to get to the bolts when the splitter has to be removed/installed, but the access is still not so good.

A quick remove bumper setup would be pretty cool in that case, making access to the bolts easy.

well thats also because u have a gangster vmount set up. you have oil coolers, all the mods u could possibly need and all the right goods..... with a car like yours, i can understand never needing to take it off.


^^ same as scrub. what else mods could either of you really need? both have flawless fd's...

i however have the crappy greddy fmic set up and i want to change it. i like to fab my own parts and experiment with stuff. on top of that both you bastards have access to lifts! jacking the car up in my garage is very tough. and it also gives more clearance to slide back and for while working under the car. with the bumper off i can fit a jack to jack the front of the car up from the subframe vs jacking one side up at a time.

i also will need to take it off again to mount my hella horns, and in the future i want to add dual oil coolers, fab my own ducts, convert my fmic into a vmount so the bumper will constantly have to come on an off. then i want to make ducting etc.

for most normal people it will probably dumb and more work, but its just my preference to removed the bumper because it makes working on my car easier.

I would say remove the bumper once and do everything at the same time. You don't HAVE to install all these little mods right now, you just want to. Save up and do it all once.

its hard to hjust have mods and not install em!!

and bubbles, the first thing I thought of when i read your OP was zip ties. pretty ghetto, but inconspicuous. Also, I'm assuming it will be temporary until you fix your car and actually get real bolts holding everything in place cus thats always the best.

I have seen a nice car in Texas;) that had Dzus fastners and the bumper was released infront of my eyes in 15 seconds or so... FWIW it was one peice with the splitter attached to it.

I'm sure you could develoup some kind of slide on clip for the sides, with perhaps one bolt at the back.

I'm planning to for my FD, as I want to run a different bumper for track use.

Seriously though, taking the bumper off isn't that hard to begin with, why do you need a quick release? I mean, how many times does it really need to come off anyway?

Oh, and I hate your "pink movement" thing... pink mods have been done time and time again, the only thing you're "starting" is down the path to a another ruined/tacky FD.

If you aren't running fender liners, keep the four or so bolts that attach under the hood and zip tie the two points where the bumper bolts to the fenders. Just pop the ties whenever you have to take off. Real quick and easy easy. Been doing this for years to get my car on and off trailers. Takes all of 2 minutes.

no its not that hard but its a pain in the ass. the car is an 18 year old car, shit breaks and im constantly fixing it up trying to restore it so i do in fact take it off rather often.

hmmm im actually only running the front part of the fender liner.... i dont line how you can see the tire from the engine bay without them... also ive tried zip ties on the outtermost loop and they dont hold "as" id like it

What does the car being 18 years old have anything to do with taking the bumper off? What "shit" is breaking constantly that you need to remove the bumper so often? This doesn't make any sense.

youre right again, my apologies.

I just use the center bolts, and one of the bolts near the the head lamps on each side, and zipties near the wheels. It doesnt take me long at all to have my bumper off and I have no ugly latches and all the panels line up perfect with no gaps just using the one bolt on each side.

yeah, i agree with rich and the others on this one. there is little to no reason for a 'quick release' bumper...

look at the types of cars that scrub posted that have 'quick release' front ends: a scion, a civic... that should tell you something. :D

truthfully i've only seen one 'street car' in-person that had a quick release bumper. it was busted ass '05 subaru sti with a full carbon fiber front end. oh and unrelated, but the hood flew up and smashed the windshield while we were on a charity cruise (i wasn't riding with him).

'quick release' on a street car = mad ricey.

just got towed again tonight... another reason why i wish i had a quick release bumper. though many of u dont agreee.

just another reason to justify i guess.

Anyone make a kit like this? Wouldn't stand out excessively on my black car and would make it a lot easier to trailer the car to events

Dzus fasteners are probably the cleanest way, and they are used by a massive number of race teams so should be available at any local speed shop. Should be able to fit them wherever any current fastener is with a little modification.
