How to Identify a Bad Idler Pulley

Good day Forum Members!

I made a brief video on how to identify a bad idler pulley. After I made this video, the new pulley and V-belts were installed. The car started up and made no unusual noises from the engine bay. I'd like to thank Ray Crowe for providing the new pulley along with his exceptional service! My thanks to all who watch this video.

Cheers,
George

Nice vid. Thanks! How much was the new one?

FWIW I’ve used one of these before to help ID noisy pulleys etc when still on the engines.

Also just curious how much the new pulley was. I figured I’d have to source a new bearing if the time came and press it into the old pulley

A new pulley was $60.59 + shipping ($15).

I did use a stethoscope but there was too much noise transmitted through the belt to isolate the problem. Additionally, the hubs for the Power Steering and Air Con were spinning so I couldn't isolate those pulleys.

Thanks for the questions and checking out the video!

Cheers,
George

Nice!

I think you can just source the bearing in the pulley and press a new bearing in if the outer metal part of the pulley is good. Also, if you want to Bling Bling, I believe Pettit Racing has an aluminum version of the idler pulley.

Thanks George!

Thank you, Dale! I wasn't sure if the bearing could be pressed out or sourced separately. Time was a limiting factor because I was prepping the car for auto-x on Sunday (tomorrow).

On the lighter side, your bling-bling remark reminded me of this parody:

"Ahhh...Cristal, my Moto, a couple of beehotches...why not?"

Cheers,
George
