HOW TO: Fix headlamp retractor motors.
So, I finally had a chance to work on my car and one of the issues was the driver's side headlamp would not go up or down. If you turned the manual knob, it would intermittently attempt to move some but stop again.
STEP ONE Remove the headlamp motor from the car. (No pictures of this step) There are 4 screws that hold the headlamp bezel, 4 more for the headlamp cover, and 4 bolts on top/2 on the side/1 under the headlamp assembly. STEP TWO Remove the headlamp rod from the motor and the 3 bolts holding the motor to the assembly. (No pictures of this step) STEP THREE Remove the 2 screws holding the plastic cover on the side of the motor and remove it to access the contacts and contact plate. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...4a40bde574.jpg You can see the corroded places in the tracks where the contacts ride. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...9993813f14.jpg STEP FOUR Clean the contact plate and contacts until they are shiny. Then I coated the plate and contacts with dielectric grease and reassembled the motor. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f4bae4a950.jpg STEP FIVE Plug the motor back in temporarily to test the motor and confirm your repair. If everything works great, reassemble and you are done! Vince |
