How to fake it? (Emissions)
 

So, I'm having some issues with getting my FD passed. They did a visual inspection and failed me because I didn't have the ACV and split air setup. Even though I passed the sniffer fine. So, I've hear of people putting the ACV on top of a BOP for visual purposes. My question is, how do you route the air from the Air pump down to the cat?

You could find another emissions station with a less anal tech. Most smog tech that have looked at my engine appear mystified and quickly just check all the visual inspection boxes. One guy actually tried to find the EGR once but gave up when I told him where it was.

^ +1 I would look for another place that is not as anal about the visual inspection.

Yeah I tried to go to another shop, but they said my car had been reported as "tampered", so I have to take it to the state. I was pissed and have never had any issues with the 7s I've owned over the past 10 years.

Anyhow, yeah Utah is lame. They are just about as strict as Cali. limepro we have to get our cars tested for emissions (smog test) and safety. It's really just a way for them to get more money and be a pain in the ass.

with the ACV! that's really the simple way, but plan B might be to make a gasket with the hole from the air pump to the split air passage only, a soda can works really well for this

Unfortunately I removed all the lines and solenoids to control the emissions. I'm not sure I follow your can trick. I was thinking I could gut my ACV so stuff would just flow through it, but I'm not sure if there'd be any adverse effects of that.

This is pretty crazy to me...first time I took my FD to get emissions tested, the tech popped the hood and starred at the engine for a good 2 minutes, then signaled another tech to come over. They both looked dumbfounded for another solid minute or so, then signaled for a younger guy to come over.

They were pointing at random things, such as my AST and intake, and shinning flashlights all around. They honestly might as well have been looking at a spaceship.

But, I did have all my emissions in-tact. However, under the equipment box, they check the air pump as "non applicable".

Sucks to hear you're having issues; I've always took my modified vehicles into Jiffylube for testing and never been questioned about anything.

yeah utah is pretty bad, and removing a emissions related piece of equipment is a class b misdemeanor here so if the state is gonna look at it i'd either make sure it has everything there, or be ready to say you didn't do the work yourself and got it like that or something. you cant actually see the ACV though just the split air pipes so maybe just dummy rigging the pipes is a good route to go. you wont pass emissions numbers though just the inspection. I gave up long ago and used another county's address that doesnt require emissions.....

An extra $100 or $200 goes a long way in a lot of peoples budget right now.

If you are failing visual but not sniffer, can you just put it in the car and route two tubes under the manifold or somewhere he can't follow? They aren't testing for the functionality of the acv or anything are they? That's annoying if you are passing smog though. In DE they do a smog and check my fuel line for pressure that's it. The RX is the only car I've ever seen then do a fuel line test on.

I wish that was the case. It seems bribes are a lost art in the USA. Maybe things have changed recently.

Any input from CA FD owners?

It would be a good idea to find someone that has gone through the inspection you're in for. Trying to fake it may backfire big time.

I went through a CA state inspection on a 25+ year old pickup I had when I moved here. With virtually no emissions equipment when it was originally sold I still had to spend several hundred $ on new intake & carb.

The state inspection was way more detailed than a regular smog station.

As for a bribe - I'm not 100% sure, but my understanding that if a CA shop gets caught accepting bribes/passing noncompliant vehicles it is a $50K fine and loss of their license to perform inspections. Not many shops will take that risk.

Smog WTF is smog? lol thank God for Ohio and Franklin county where straight pipe rotaries are left alone to pollute the earth lol. :lol:

but on a serious not i suggest making it look as stock as possible, as i have no idea what these guys look for while performing a smog test.

I live in PA where yearly inspections are the thing. The county I live in doesn't have emissions testing but all the emissions equipment is required to be intact and looks functional per state law. However, most shops will overlook just about everything except a cat. Even if it just looks like there is a cat there you will get a sticker most of the time. Then there's the other guys that don't care at all and you can have a FC with zero emissions equipment and a straight thru 3" exhaust that is "perfectly street legal"
