How to determine type of ECU ?
Anyone knows how I can determine whether my car has Cali or Non-Cali ECU ? (I live in Europe btw. ;) )
Any visual signs, except looking at the numbers on the ECU ? What should I look for (either visual signs or ECU number) ? |
92-93 5 speed ecu's are
n3a3 cali n3a1 non cali 94 5 speeds n3a3 cal n3c1 non cal 95 5speeds n3e1 cal n3d1? non cal the jdm cars are n3a7? 92-95 mike |
i didn't even know california 7s had there own ecus.

Now that is one hell of an Info !!
Thanks j9fd3s ! |
It makes me wonder what I have in mine. I will have to go look at it.
|
cool
|
Just to add a little to this:
-93 Euro Spec is N3B7 |
Does anyone know what changed between ECU versions? Maybe one of these units is better for performance than the others (for OEM anyway)...
|
The Euro-spec limit stock power to 239bhp
|
One of the changes was between the 93 and 94-95 model ecus. Something to do with an egr code or something.
|
Great info...
but is there a list that shows the capabilities and shortcomings of each?! now THAT would be great! |

Just adding to this with some more info regarding the JDM cars:
Emailed Mazda New Zealand with a query about my ECU code 'N3A8'. Got a very comprehensive reply (see attached images for more detail): In summary: 1991-94: N3A7 18 881A/B/C - 5 speed N3A8 18 881A/B/C - AT 1995-?(probably upto 1998 or 99): N3F1 18 881A/B/C - 5 speed N3F2 18 881A/B/C - 5 speed My 1992 Japanese model had a AT-MT conversion, but is still running the AT ECU (N3A8). I believe it still has the AT harness due to the jumper & custom wiring on the transmission connectors. Mods, can we add a link to this thread on the FAQ please - there are alot of other threads asking about ECU codes, but most simply point to this thread. |
Jspec cars did not have EGR or AWS at all so their ECU is going to be different. On the opposite end of the spectrum, California spec cars had an additional EGR switch. US Fed spec is somewhere in the middle in terms of the emission controls.
hwned as disassembled a few different ECU's, he might be able to shed some additional light on this matter. |
Sorry, just a correction regarding my earlier post:
The 1995+ 'N3F2 18 881A/B/C - 5 speed' should actually read: 'N3F2 18 881A/B/C - AT' |

thanks for clearing that up, that is obscure info but good to know

can we swap in a 93 fed ecu into a 94 and use a block off plate on the egr so no code 16 is thrown?
