how come clutch makes funny noises?

Hey people...strange problem. How come when, I push my clutch in during idle (not in gear), I hear weird whirling, scraping sounds....any ideas?

could it be throwout bearing?

jeff8932612 04-26-02 10:38 PM

or pilot bearing?

mazda/feed 04-26-02 11:49 PM

yea if anyone can help, i have the same problem sounds like a mouse under the car. and if i shift alot in traffic for example i cant get it into gear.

It is the throwout (release) bearing. Usually its when you are in neutral that you hear it, and it goes away when you press it in. No big deal, just change it next time you change out your clutch.

if your having trouble with your tranny/clutch, check this out. http://www.mazdatrix.com/g2.htm

it does sound like your throwout bearing, i got the same problem.

Do any of you have a twin plate? If you
have a twin plate, its common practice for
that to happen after you get it all nice
and broke in. Now if its stock, it just means
your clutch is a little worn out..

NO WORRIES

that sucks, because I had the clutch, throw out and pilot bearings replaced!! Looks like they didn't do a good job of resurfacing the spindle or whatever that metal rod the bearings sits on......AAAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!

black99 04-27-02 01:34 PM

Don't let it go too far or you'll desinigrate your pilot bearing.. I did that. But I got lazy and let it go for like a year.

*Edit* I shouldn't say desinigrate because there were peices still left, but let's just say "screw up"..

REDLINE 04-27-02 01:57 PM

yeah, I know...last time it happened, they took out the clutch, the bearings were broken onto tiny pieces and scored that spindle-rod thingy.....they had to resurface the spindlethingy and I'm guessing they didn't do to good a job, cause I guess its coming back again....this is less than 3000 miles ago!!!

Mine is making the same noise...
How much does it cost to have the pilot and throwout bearings replaced?

IgoSlow 04-29-02 11:18 PM

The prices of both bearings are cheap... it's the labor that kicks your ass in... SO look for a shop that just does alot of tranny work.. no rotary specialist needed fot that job...

coop 04-30-02 07:15 AM

cool thanks!
If the shop is in there replacing the berings, should I upgrade the clutch and flywheel?
