How come car dies when put into gear (with fans on 3rd.)???
Help me guys!!! I don't know whats happening...My car starts up fine, drives and all, but when idling with fans and other electrical loads off, car seems fine. As soon as I turn fans onto 3 (so electrical load will turn engine cooling fans on earlier), and I stick it into any gear, the car dies!!! Anyone else heard of this problem before? Should I reset the ECU?? Help me please!! This is my daily driver...

Get a new clutch switch for about $50.
Oops sorry, it might not be the clutch switch. Forgot about what it was....But if I remember correctly, it's expensive to fix. What I did was I pulled the A/C fuse and it didnt die anymore.

There's a Special Service Program out for the 93 FD (SSP39), where the engine stalls with electrical load on the car(A/C or what-not), especially when coming to a stop. The ECU is replaced as a remedy. It may apply to you or maybe not, but worth checking out. Call Mazda Customer Relations with your VIN and see if it applies. 1-800-222-5500

Thanks for the replies..any other possibilities?
Mighty slash, regarding the AC fuse...I didn't turn on my AC though. I tried turning it on and the same thing happened. All I did was turn the fan to 3..does the AC fuse trick still apply? And whats expensive to fix? Do you remember?
That's weird. It shouldnt die without the A/C on. I dont think the A/C trick will apply then.
does the car try to run or just shit? If it tries to run, ECU adjusting, especially if its aftermarket. Just shits, well your guess is as good as mine. What kind of clutch do you have? stock aftermarket? or are you auto?
well, as soon as I put it into a gear, nothing happens for the first split second, then all of a sudden it just dies. If I start the car with lights on and in first gear, it seems like its barely staying alive...rpm isn't adjusting, just extremely low...I'm going to try and increase the idle for now....anyone know how I can do this?
If you're having idle problems like the rpm is struggling, a new clutch switch will help a little.
how much is a clutch switch, and is it hard to replace?
Like someone else mentioned there was a recall on the ECU's in the early 93's that dealt with stalling problems, check to see if your ECU is an "R" model (will say "Remanufactured for Mazda" on it and have an R in the serial number) Also, it's definitely not the clutch switch, but it could be the 1-2 switch in the tranny, but check the ECU first.
Hmm...I'm going to have to check the ECU...funny thing is I turned up the idle so now it idles at 1100 rpm, and when put into gear the car would still die at electrical load....but lately the problem went completely away!!! I DON"T GET IT!!!!!! I guess they really are mood....my mechanic said it could either be the intake throttle (bypass) or just plain electrical problems....oh well...now its just runs fine...knock on wood. If anyone else had similar problems, please let me know.....
Whats the 1-2 switch in th tranny? Is it hard to replace? expensive? what does it do?
Well, the car started acting funny again....it ran fine for two days now with my idle turned up at 1100, but today while looking for a parking spot, when I put the car in gear, the idle would fluctuate between 1100 and 900 repeadetly....seems like its about to die when it hits 900 and just shoots back up again....with/without electrical load....I'm guessing its an electrical problem. Any suggestions or opinions will be highly appreciated Please...

I wish I could help :( here's a TTT for ya' though

Mightyslash, thanks for the input. Have you had a similar problem before?
^^
Yeah, the engine used to die on me with the A/C on. And the idle is kinda rough, like yours. So I pulled the A/C fuse and got a new clutch switch. No more idle problems.
Wheres the clutch switch located? is hard/expensive to replace? What exactly does it do? sorry for all the questions.....
I just had a similar problem yesterday. My parking lights were on and AC on 3, but my car died while idling at a stop light. At the stop light, I first noticed the idle fluctuate a couple hundred RPM then it died.
Have you solved your problem yet? Ant |
No not really. Now it only does it couple times. Doesn't really die, but when I put into gear sometimes, the idle would bounce around about 3 times and settle down....very strange...
For Christs Sake"! LOL its been said three time already and you still have a CONFUSED post- It is 95% chance that it is YOUR CLUTCH SWITCH, i'll say it again IT IS YOUR CLUTCH SWITCH oh and one more time, IT IS YOUR CLUTCH SWITCH. [turns forum sarcasm off]
Now that this has been cleared up, the switch is located on the drivers side firewall behind the clutch pedal- Now go forth and replace it! |
