Here are some pics of how I decided to install the hotlap timing system in my track car.

I didn't want the display hanging out somewhere wack and so I decided to mount it in the glove box with the other 'controller' boxes, its nice because it kinda hide it all when you close it up, and i don't look at my time until after the session anyway, but if i did want to see it as im lapping then I can just open the glovebox to see it and I can rotate it a bit for the best driver, passenger or vid camera viewing angle. (mounted with velcro for rotational freedom but limited in free movement for safety reasons).

The receiver mounted relatively easy on the roll bar and after testing it got a clear signal through the corner of the hatch window.

hehe, im just givin ya a hard time, if your not familiar with it then it would be hard to tell what it is....

its a timing system so that you can record lap times on the track.

how does it know when you have past the finish line?

Thats just awesome man. I'd love to have one, hell I'd love to get to a track someday.

Isn't hotlap the same system that all the magazines (C&D, MT, etc.) uise for their cars?

A transmitter is placed along side the track.

I believe that the major magazines have moved to GPS-based systems for timing and distance measurement.

Hotlap timers are pretty common (out West, anyway) for track hounds and club racers. One or more infrared transmitters are set up at the side of the track, and as cars like Damian's go by, their receiver logs the event.

You can often get by (out West, anyway) by just buying the receiving unit (that Damian shows), because there is almost always someone who shows up with the transmitter.

good question, i should have posted a pic of the missing part of teh system, the transmitter.... like the other guys mentioned, it shoots a beam across teh track and the reciever picks it up, recording lap count and time.

I have the double range one that is powered by a 12v battery, so basically you can set it next to the track on top of a space car battery and let it run forever while you lap the track.....

and like artowar said, you only need one transmitter since all the recievers can use that same transmitter beam.

yeah, like artowar said i think they have stepped up their technology, but for track buffs this system is great, relativly accurate, and relativly in-expensive

yeah, ill keep ya posted on how it performs, first use will be at Road America in april :-)

it worked great on my 'around the block' test :-) (heheheh)

And if more than one person has the transmitters you can set them up to give split times around the track I believe.( from reading their site)
