jupiter: nice ride you have any more pix?? :D

jupiter 04-15-03 10:37 AM

Thnx.
Here are more pics of the vents.
And a pic before the vents....
I can see the heatwave blowing pass the top of my windshield with the fans on.
So it has to be doing some cooling.

Alien7 04-15-03 11:24 AM

so you've never had a hot temp issue?

Conv.WS6 04-15-03 12:14 PM

Yeah you could sell these kits for $100 just like the ground strap kits on the rx7store. LOL..... I would say if you could neck the release of the air collected up to the top of the engine compartment near the hood it would further pressurize the compartment, and more air would flow past the turbos releasing the heat. Of course there wouldn't be a noticable change, but every little bit helps. Good luck with your testing, and let us know what the pyro meter reads with and without the mod. I'm about the same way. I look for the cheep mods and duct tape. LOL.... People kind of laugh sometimes at the track, but they change their tune when they see my taillights. :)

Conv.WS6 04-15-03 12:16 PM

Hey Jupiter, where did you get those vents at?
I have the Viper scope, but that would be nice to have the vents as well when I start working on my hood.

Yep, the green area is where you make the foil lined duct. You need to cut the hole in the interior side of the frame by putting your hole saw inside the exterior square to cut. BE VERY CAREFULL not to let the saw blade nick anything on the inside or you'll be paying big bucks to fix it......... The red area is where you cut the oval in the plastic duct to attach your 4" dryer hose.
ok i get where to cut the hole now. but where is the red area that you are talking about. i looked at the pics again and still didnt' see where to go for it.

Jedon 04-15-03 12:33 PM

I have an R1, I take it I can't do this mod since I'm actually using the duct for my second oil cooler?

jpandes 04-15-03 12:46 PM

You should be able to, unless the pressure of the hot engine air is greater than the hot air flowing through your oil coolers. Then you'd be heating your oil.:(

jupiter 04-15-03 06:03 PM

Ahhh.... the vents are custom made....$100 a piece....
jk, they're off an old car (you have to guess, should be easy)
@ your local junk yard. (talk about ghetto mods) :D
But I don't have $700 to blow on a vented hood.
Still have to do blocking plates for it though.
My car never overheated, but I've replace my stock rad when I bought the car and change coolant every year....
We'll see when I take it to the track.
I've been hesitant cuz its my daily driver.

Na, you can still do it - just make sure you keep the existing duct work inside the fender, you DO NOT want to take anything away from the oil cooler - they are FAR more important then venting heat from the engine compartment.

DOOD! That looks good..... and I'll bet they work well! You are an OFFICIAL member of the ghetto club. Remember everyone - it CAN NOT LOOK ghetto and it must be FUNCTIONAL or your membership will be revoked in a heartbeat.:D

If I could only find a couple of small NACA ducts that would fit the curvature of the hood in that same place perfectly, I just might take a roto zip to it. HMMMMmmmmmmmmm....time for a search.:blue:

280Z?;) Please don't tell me it's domestic or I'll :puke:

ExpensiveHobby22 04-15-03 11:04 PM

Having a body shop make some louvers or doing them yourself where those hood vents are would look cool too. Of course it wouldn't be cheap anymore if you had the body shop do it. Those vents do look pretty cool though.

Those inside the fender vents are a good idea. So, you've had no issues with them since you put them in?
Nothing like the paint getting messed up or the duct warping?

Nope. Remember, the duct was designed to handle hot air since it is for clothes dryers.

WooHoo! (pin on badge)
Good guess on the vents. Now try to find a good one.

I was thinking of using a chevy lumina z 34 vents...I'll find some 280z vents ...

Hey ron, Kudos on not going off at everyone here that made fun of your invention. You always responded very calmly to all the puns. I think its a great idea, all great ideas started out cheap, by tommorrow RonKMiller could be a millionaire, so watch out. :D

WHAT, someone made fun of me?;)

Every day I drive and look at my twin rotor head temperature gauges (with sensors at the base of the leading plugs) at 190 to 200F I just sit back and RELAX...

rousu 05-03-04 02:39 PM

Anybody try this with the stock plastic grids and see if they really melt?

Those dummy vents have struck me as one of the few non-functional parts of a car that breathes aero functionality otherwise.

Nobody answered the novice question of how much work it is to remove and then perfectly re-allign the re-installed fenders.... curious.

But I'm not clear about that, given that I think it is supposed to use the driver's side fender vent.

I wonder if doing this mod only to the passenger side would cause any anomalies in airflow?

jds

Cut a hole in the front fender liner, so the warm air from the oil coolers can pass on through.

have you noticed any kind of a better rebound time from your fans? are they working less now?

rousu 10-27-04 04:44 PM

Darn. I had to have the engine replaced and forgot about this mod when the compartment was all accessable. Other than pulling the fenders.

I thought there were a few more picture links; are they still on this new hosting of the site?

wadejg 09-23-06 07:47 PM

So does anybody have saved pictures from this thread that they can post up?

Thanks,
Justin Wade
