Hopeful future owner of an RX7

Being 18 and a noob at this forum I'm probably going to get bashed with my dilemma :(

So I've been wanting an FD RX7 for quite some time now. So I've been looking around and seen a couple that really got my attention but im not sure if i can post links to autotrader?

Today, i went to mazda and got offered 27k for brand new rx8 r3. My parents will help me pay for the car so thats where the bashing begins . my parents are pushing the new rx8 but i really want an rx7. Now i know the new rx8 would be the better daily driver but i dont plan on driving either on a daily basis anyway.

Any advice/criticism would be appreciated :)

btw the rx7's im looking at are both 93. One has about 34k original miles and sells for negotiable 14k. While the other one has 21k original miles for negotiable 23k.

The number one rule of owning an Rx7:
Have disposable income.

I hope you have a job, because you normally can't just buy an Rx7 and be done with it. There will ALWAYS be repairs/maintenance.

That's the only reason I don't have one right now. I could have purchased one, but being a college student, I don't have income regularly and I also needed a steady DD.

I would say go for the rx8 r3.

RiceFx306 01-20-10 07:05 PM

No offense, but perhaps a 350Z. Especially for a lot of stop and go.

yup, that is one of the best advise out there. i work 2 jobs just to keep up with my car. i dont make that much, but i make enough to pay for all the little repairs and upgrades for this little money whore lol. i coulda had an easy life with a brand new car my parents offered me, only had to worry bout registration and insurance and a little bit of monthly here and there depending on the car i was gonna choose.

i turned down in order of my moms last minute ditch effort for me not to get the 7 lol from lowest price to highest of what she could afford.

-2010 camry fully loaded
-2009 mini cooper s
-hyundai genesis
-200x rx8 r3
-audi a6
-audi r8 v8 base model

im happy to be paying for my own stuff even though its a pain in the ass, but i do it for the love of it. and all my friends called me stupid and retarded when i turned down an audi r8...fk that the insurance and registration would have been ridiculous.

GreatShamanGT 01-20-10 07:18 PM

get the rx8 r3, there's a warranty in case you fck something up.

zack4173 01-20-10 07:24 PM

first off i would never buy an rx8 I have seen way to many of there engines blow way to early. Second like the first guy said if you don't have a disposable income or a lot of car knowledge then the FD is not for you. If I were you I would go with an s2000 or a 350z or even a genesis. I think the genesis is going to have a lot of after market support soon and its a great platform. These are good ideas for rear wheel drive cars. If you want all wheel drive try an evo 9 or an sti.

hmm i have considered that too. I dont know but my parents are really stingy about used cars, so im not sure what kind of deal i can get on a 370z.

Now i do have a job but its really just part time, i valet every weekend and ill probably work more once i get hired to another company, but i will be a college student at the same time.

Btw im checking out one of the RX7s this weekend with my dad, the one with 34k miles and hopefully it was well taken care of.

Dcashdollar 01-20-10 07:34 PM

Man I wish my parents bought me a car. Lucky punk. Hope they will pay for maintenance too.

EK7 01-20-10 07:40 PM

yea i guess im quite fortunate i don't want to abuse it though so im going to try to help with payments as much as i can.

zack4173, basically all you suggested are the cars im looking at except i think the sti and evo are way off my budget. The S2k would be great and im looking forward to testdrive it along with the 370z. Not so sure about the Genesis. By the way, i test drove the speed3 and auto rx8 (they ddnt have r3 for test). The speed3 was pretty awesome, the rx8 wasn't quite exciting but i think being auto had a lot to do with it.

If I were you I probably fall for the RX7 too. however I still say you should go for RX8 (if you love rotary) or genesis like someone said. btw, 370z is also amazing too. hey if I have the luxury like you, I would ask my parents get me G37 instead.

grimple1 01-20-10 08:08 PM

drive a beater and wait for the RX8 with the 16x rotary, imo. 27k for a new car is stupid.... any car. You can go ahead and take 3-5k off the value the moment you drive it off the lot. Worst investment for your money: PERIOD.

the rx8's aren't "exciting" cars to drive unless you enjoy GREAT handling. They're not gonna punch you back in the seat like a 370, S2k or the STI/Evos. The Genesis is a car you should test drive and you'll change your mind about Kia's.

p.s. infiniti drivers are annoying. I can't drive two blocks without some infiniti G kid revving me at stop lights. I wrote a post about it in the west section and from the looks of things, I'm not the only one that gets this from G owners. NEWS FLASH: IT'S NOT A SKYLINE

EK7 01-20-10 08:20 PM

haha i sorta agree with the g35 drivers comment.......the genesis is hyundai i believe :p

wolf_9782 01-20-10 08:21 PM

to the OP, i understand you love the FD RX-7. its a wonderful car however its a huge responsibility to own it and to take care of it. if you want the car i suggest you do the following:

1) if you dont have a job, get one. work hard and bust your ass, then save up best you can.

2) if you're parents are going to help you, chances are they will sign the title. dont get your parents involved in this purchase at all. if you want it, then you buy it alone. if your parents offer money, refuse it. they get any kind of share in this car, when it breaks down (which it will) they will attempt to sell it. if the title is under their name...you lose.

3) research this forum deeply and learn everything you can. once you know more about the FD then you should make your choice if its for you. the rotary engine has an unforgiving learning curve to those who have never dealt with one. the FAQ is very extensive, take advantage of it.

4) this is also key, get a daily driver to get you to point A and B. the FD will be down alot for maintenance. doesnt have to be flashy or pretty, thats what your FD is for!

thats all the advice i can offer you in this decision.

JStrib 01-20-10 08:42 PM

My first rotary car was an 04 RX8. I loved it to death! They teach you a good deal and the dealership can fix most everything under warranty when something tears up. I'd go with that first, otherwise the FD may beat the rotary love out of you too quickly! lol

On the other hand..If you have another car as the daily car and you have a great deal of patience, then go for an FD!

It's completely up to you, I hope this post helped at least a little.

sk863 01-20-10 08:43 PM

since your parents are paying money to buy rx8 you should buy a cheap rx7 on craigslist and and just buy all new parts so you know it wont break down anytime soon but shit happins but it would still be cheaper then rx8 and just dont be stupid and put money back for rainy days and you should be ok work for me i buy cheap cars and just fix them up and it saves way more money then buying sumthing newer

yourmom23 01-21-10 12:17 AM

Go for the seven man all the way.

Rebuilt motor by reputible builder
Convert to non seq turbos
koyo radiator]
Stock mount intercooler+hardpipes
Pettit ecu
Down pipe
Cat back exhaust
Replace all coolent hoses
boost gauge
coolent temp gauge

Thats it now you have a pretty reliable car thats fun, easy as that..... well i guess thats still quite a bit.

GreatShamanGT 01-21-10 12:26 AM

With 34k miles, I'd worry about some of the hoses getting brittle over time with it just sitting

rdahm 01-21-10 12:42 AM

My mom wanted me to buy a sporty car when i turned 18 so she helped me buy a little red coupe from a neighbor. It was an 1988 RX7 GXL. Registered to rx7club and became obsessed with rotaries. That obsession turned into a TV deal being worked out with several TV channels.

So long story short, no one knows what the future will bring. I bought my FD before i bought my house. Ohhh my dad wanted to kill me. But i own a computer company so i technically have good disposable income. still the FD was over my head.

My little soapbox speech: if you are a car guy, buy a car you are obsessed with. i dont mean "want really bad" i mean you love the car. Because some day when everything else in your life seems like crap, you can at least stare at the car and admire what you have.

widebodyseven 01-21-10 01:36 AM

Go with the rx8 because if something happens mazda will fix, im also 18 and i use to have a 07 rx8 and a 93 rx7 but the rx8 was the DD and the FD was the project car and there both sold.

If your first car is going to be a rotary get a new rx8.

But if your not looking in to a rotary i say get the new STI or EVO

FDWarrior 01-21-10 01:56 AM

I have driven an rx8 and they are slow by my standards. No one has mentioned an e46 m3. I had an e46 m3 and absolutely loved it. The m3 was my daily and I have an FD for track use. The m3 truly was an amazing machine. Since Im stupid some times I thought it would be a good idea to buy a 2010 camaro, do not buy a 2010 camaro (some friendly advice). Good luck on finding a car.

CheesePowder 01-21-10 02:45 AM

Has the option for 2 cars been ruled out? How bout FD + beater Miata. That's how I'd do it if I had a time machine.

Montego 01-21-10 12:49 PM

don't get the seven.

It will break (constantly) and you will never hear the end of it from your parents. My vote goes for the 370Z as well

It's opposite for me. All of my other cars break constantly and force me to put miles on my fd.

TwinTurboSC 01-21-10 01:42 PM

You turned down an Audi R8 for an RX7?

I love FD's and all, but....

That being said, I'm sure mommy will have no problem bailing you out when it breaks down since she was going to buy you an R8 anyways.
