The Hood Hook Thing

hey,
hehe im pretty new to car terminology and was wonder what thing thing is called that keeps your hood from falling on your head? Also i was wondering if anyone knows of a hood that makes it like air pressure like where you dont have to put the hook on and it just stays up by itself.

Thanks
Phil

I've always just called it the a prop, never considered if there was a 'technical' name to it. :)

Hydralic's are used on hoods that stay up on their own like hatches. I've never heard or seen of one on an FD though.

The technical term is "stay". It is the hood stay.
I don't think you would want any sort of assist to hold the hood open, such as the nitrogen filled "stay dampers" such as the rear hatch has, on a front-opening type hood. The idea being that the weight of the hood assists the proper latching of it.

My Suburban has these gigantic springs that assist the lifting of the hood and then hold it up once it is all the way up, as do a lot of other cars for that matter.

went to an auto show

i went to an auto show and a lot of newer cars had these hood "stay". And I think its a really good idea to have something like that in the front and i mean you kinda have to basically nudge the hood down but its really nothing to difficult.

So if anyone knows where I can get these that are like universal or made for the mazda please contact me.

Thanks
Phil

The FD hood is aluminum and only 18lbs. By design. Why would anyone want assistance in raising/lowering it? The stock hood/stay combo is best for weight savings.

Actually my last Audi had these "stay dampers" for the hood. They worked great and I never had any probs with the hood coming down, which was quite heavy and large.
