Homemade PFC commander mount

This is a pretty weak write-up for a pretty weak product haha, but I figured it might help some of you if you have a PFC and need to figure out a way to mount the commander...more specifically for those of us that have 94 or 95 FDs and can't use the common commander mount on the Banzai website. I made a mount a couple years ago but it was broken by the guys that did my body work and paint and I like this one much better anyway. It's REALLY easy and cheap too.

In short, all I did was cut a slot into the dash between the stereo surround and where it meets the soft part of the dash. You can see where the hole is if you're looking for it but you'd never notice if you didn't know it was there. When cutting the hole you have to be sure that it's not too wide or long for the metal you're going to use because it needs to be tight in order to hold the mount without shaking out during driving or under boost. To make the cut I just disassembled that part of the dash, taking the stereo surround piece off, I cut some of the soft part back so I could cut the slot as far over as possible so it wouldn't press the surround piece over against the gauge cluster. Not sure if that makes sense haha. I used a dremel with a cutting wheel to cut the slot.

Then I found a thin but sturdy piece of metal and cut it so it would have a long piece to slide into the dash. I thought about bending it once I had it into the dash to ensure it wouldn't slide out but it's holding in there pretty well as it is and I want to be able to pull it out too. Then I painted the parts of the metal that would show with some bed liner from a rattle can. Then I used molding tape to stick the commander to the metal piece and put it in the dash. Here is what the mount looks like stuck to the commander and the last pic is of what it looks like from the back when it's in the dash.

Like I said, it's pretty weak, especially compared to some of the stuff others have come up with, but I love this thing and the way it sits. Plus it helps that it cost me basically $0 to make it and I ALWAYS love that haha.

Not bad Eric, I like it!

Nice idea. Just don't like the cutting part.

I was able to use a universal phone holder that was $10 with out cutting into the dash. I just used 3M moulding tape and taped it to the dash. The phone holder has rubber sides so the Commander doesn't vibrate at all. Best part, it's removable with no damage. :icon_tup:

^I used that same universal cell phone holder (bracketron is the manufacture IIRC) except I modified mine to plug into the cigg lighter socket, so that way it also puts it in my line of sight. It blocks the right side bank of warning lights, only one over there I care about anyway is the e-brake indicator.

Yeah I never really wanted to do anything irreversible to the car like cutting anything so it took me a bit to think about if I really wanted to do this, but I figured I've already flared my rear fenders irreversibly and you can't even see this cut if you're not looking for it. I thought about taping stuff to the dash like this or gauges but I wasn't sure if the tape would damage the dash if I took it off later and that would be visible. The first idea I had for this would have left a visible mark if I had taken the mount out at some point, but I realized if I cut it far enough over towards the soft part of the dash it wouldn't be noticeable if removed.

I also didn't want to do this because sometimes I use my lighter socket and I want to have this in a place where I won't have to move it.

I'm glad you guys are posting up your mounts too though, maybe we can make this a general commander-mounting options thread.

I wasn't trying to thread jack you Speedjunkie....just wanted to show no cutting was needed..
ALL good ideas for 94-95 Fd owners...
It just sucks that we can't use the holder like the 93's can.... Guess having a 94-95 has just one SMALL down fall..:egrin:

Oh by no means do I accuse you of threadjacking haha, like I said, I'm glad you guys are posting them up so people can find different ideas in one thread. I hadn't thought of that when I originally made this thread but I'm glad you guys did that.

Yeah I usually try to stay away from the first model years of cars because of problems they may have, and when I was buying I heard that 93s had cooling issues and figured it would be fixed by 94 so that's why I bought a 94 haha. Not sure if that's correct anyway, but at least the 93 guys and even the FC owners have mounts they can buy and put in. I just like making my own stuff anyway and honestly I like this better than the mount they can buy anyway haha.

Keep posting up guys, let's see if there is anyone else with other ideas.
