FYI I have a front mount with a stock radiator and needed some extra space, so I am using two SPAL 30101500 fans with no shroud. On a 40 degree day the fans are able to maintain a coolant temperature of 90 degrees at idle.

Koyo v mount

Hi, I am a new guy here but the fans below the car thing scares me just a little bit.
There are alternative ways to do this.

Relax david93fdr1, your SMIC setup is fine for a few laps around the track. If you need to push your boosted 13b to more than 20 laps you will need a v mount.

As I said, I am the new guy here.
Thanks, Dave

Wanted to confirm the ~2010 Honda Insight battery works perfect. Group 151R. My local NAPA in BFE had one.

The kit recommends a 38B19 or something, my car came from japan with a 40B19 which you see in the photo. Its an exact match with the 40B19

Funny I just posted here the other day. Became a victim of the low hanging fans. Must have banged them off the pavement in a construction zone earlier today, punctured the bridges or whatever you call them between the fins and the end tank :(

Aarkaah 09-14-20 05:00 PM

Damn man. Sorry to hear. Hopefully nothing overheated?

AE_Racer 09-14-20 05:14 PM

I normally watch everything like a hawk but I was pulling into a place I hadnt been before and parking. Prior to I saw it pretty normal in the mid 80 C, then I saw 113 C on the commander as I pulled into a spot, but it couldnt have been more than a minute or two and at idle speeds basically. My defi sensor thats in the throtte body line never moved above 180. So the engine saw some considerable temps apparently, not sure if steam shooting through or something could do that?

ill be reconsidering this setup. My buddy said he can weld up the koyo pretty easy.. but I dont want to get stranded again over something like this. And hopefully the motor is ok.

Aarkaah 09-14-20 06:40 PM

Not a good day. Damn

AE_Racer 09-14-20 09:10 PM

Thought I posted this earlier. Leading edges of the fan were scrubbed and here’s the rad damage to the tubes

you can have the tubes brazed at an "experienced" radiator shop

The stock fans are more than adequate. Why would you want those enormous and unnecessary fans hanging below the bumper line? It'd better be a smooth track car and never have an off-track event to make those work. All that glitters...

Manny_Apex 12-23-20 12:08 AM

You're absolutely right, the stock fans are more than adequate. However if I can save myself just a couple inches of space between my fans and the ground I'd feel so much better. The roads in the desert are HORRIBLE!!!

Narfle 12-23-20 01:17 AM

Ah, I see. It may be difficult to find aftermarket electric fans that are lower profile than stock and move enough CFM. You'll have to be the guinea pig a bit. I think chips motorsports made a similar shroud.

Hi,

I have some trouble wiring my SPAL fan on the OEM wiring.

How did you plug the positive and negative pin into the OEM plug, can anyone help?

Thank you!!!

The SPAL fans probably won't work well/easily with the stock fan control system. You'd do better to wire them up to a switch and relay.

Warren Newton 05-17-21 01:57 AM

Ok, thanks for your help.

I wired one fan to the AC switch directly and the other one should engage when thermoswitch is closed (white wire from relay #4).

FYI I found this Youtube video the other day -

He covers a lot of the install process. This is on a later JDM car so some things fit and work that wouldn't work properly in a LHD 93-95 car. But it's a great overview of the install.
