HKS Twin Power Dyno Comparison
I do not know if this has been posted before, I know I have not posted any dyno comparison sheets on this subject. There have been many posts referencing high RPM ignition issues and the fix is to install an HKS Twin Power. I am not sure people know just how dramatic the addition actually is. Today I was dyno tuning a car in this oppressive 90F heat. Not only does it cure the ignition breakup, but is also adds torque and HP across the entire RPM range.
The car I was tuning had just basic mods; 93 R1 with intake, exhaust on stock twins and injectors with our Banzai Racing rebuilt engine with stock porting. It's way more than just a box with a blinky light!
My twin power was actually masking a weak leading coil... with twin power plugged in I could feel a slight hesitation as it misfired, without the twin power it fell right on its face above 5,000rpm. Had to totally unplug my trailing coils to isolate the bad leading coil. |
After installing the HKS Twin Power and eliminating the high RPM issues, I was able to complete the tuning and got the car to 338rwhp/269tq @ 14.7psi. At this point the stock injectors were maxed out and the car really needs an IC upgrade.

Too bad you weren't able to compare stock vs twin power vs aem ign-a to see how much ign-a differs from the twin power on this setup. |
Somebody else needs to show a side by side comparison to the AEM coils.

I couldnt really boost more than 16psi with my setup due to ignition break ups.. im currently close to 30 with the TP.

We have customers making well over 500rwhp with stock coils and the Twin Power, even on my 20B I have the 6 channel TP and 6 stock trailing coils

Banzai , you happen to notice the A/F differences between the runs? I'm sure the hotter spark changed the ratios some but curious how much?

One thing to also keep in mind, most people compare stock coils or stock coils + twin power to brand new ign-a coils. I am not sure how accurate this is of a test.
It would be interesting to compare new stock coils + twin power against new ign-a coils. I had 96K miles on my old ignition coils and replaced them with new stock coils since they were old. I think I gained power across the rpm band just going with new stock coils. I run the twin power as well. I run water meth injection with stock NGK 9's all around. |

Is a tune required if I install a HKS Twin power, with everything else being the same?

Any changes to fuel, air or ignition should at least have the AFR's verified, if a substantial change is noted then a tune is required. The car above was already at the shop for tuning, the first run the AFR's were stable but the ignition was not, installed the TP for the next run and the AFR's were still within acceptable range. Then proceeded with tuning the car.

Guys do you know anyone that sells a used twin spark? i have ignition break up at high rpms lately and am looking for a used one. thanks

I always buy everything on my credit card and pay with paypal. Buyer protections FTW. |
To each their own, I do not buy used parts, period. Been burned too many times, does not matter if you use Paypal and a CC, the frustration of not having a part delivered for weeks or months, then filing all the claims is not worth the hassle.
For every anecdotal story of success, there is one of someone getting screwed over. |
