HKS SSQV Gen1 - flutter=compressor surge
 

I picked up this HKS SSQV BOV and mounted it to the ASP large on the end tank.

At low boost (5-7 psi), if I lift off the throttle, I hear a fluttering sound. Is this compressor surge?

BTW - these things are not supposed to leak under boost but I'm hearing boost leak. Is it because I'm not using the orange o-ring to mount the BOV to the flange?

What a piece of shit even though it looks like the real thing. I bought this because I'm running 14psi and my oem bov sounded it's undersized as it's whistling at 14psi.

so you are not using an oring and wondering if it is leaking at the flange?? i would guess yea it is.

you sure it is surge and not the valve making the sound?

i guess you could begetting some surge if the spring in the bov is to stiff to be pulled up by the vac with only 6 psi of boost to help it out. isnt there an adjustment bolt on the top of it?

why not just get rid of it altogether?(that should prob be in another thread lol)

I do have the o-ring (black) that came with the flange mounted between the BOV and the flange.

So you bought a knock off and you're wondering why it doesn't work right?

i had the same issue with both a knockoff and a real hks ssqv. i checked the usual, boost leak, o ring leaks etc. i could not figure it out. i replaced it with a synapse b.o.v which solved the problem. i'm using the synapse hks adapter which mounts to the original snap ring hks flange. no welding involved

Im running an HKS V2 on my ms3, 15k+ miles and have yet to leak. Stock boost is 15.8

It makes a fluttering sound in low boost, but thats just how the valve sounds. Its the design.

I had an HKS gen1 valve on my car for about 6 months. No fluttering noises or compressor surge if the spring is properly adjusted properly. BUT like mentioned above, if you purchased some cheap knock-off. It is anyone's guess what is going on with it. Keep adjusting the spring pressure and see if you can dial it in. Most pressure relief valves are going to need a little tweaking after installing.

If you did purchase a knock-off, why purchase ANY questionable quality part that deals with boost manipulation for your car?? This simple valve if not operating properly could cause turbo or engine damage. So why risk either of those two very expensive components on trying to save a few bucks on a pressure relief valve? Not worth it IMHO. If you did purchase an authentic HKS great! Hopefully anyone reading this considering the cheap alternative will think twice.

I ditched my HKS for a GReddy b/c I just could not stand the sound of the HKS. It was so screechy/screamy it just sounded cheesy to me. But again, that is just a personal opinion.

I bought it used from a forum member. It doesn't look like a china made one because the casting quality is very good. But you never know. Time to try something else.

And I see you're rich too cause you buy knock off body pieces from Shine and knock off IC from XS;

At least I bought a used part from a respected forum member, not a knock-off but who knows.

Oops, forgot to note, my fluttering is due to my car running in recirc. Vta, you can hear the flutter as well, but the chirp overwhelms it, so it isn't as distinct.

You might try taking it apart to service/clean it.
