High idal on start up????
When I start up the engine on my 3rd gen R1 it idal between 2-4krpm then comes down to 1k? Whats the deal with that?
Help! Thanks, Brad |
It’s the AWS (accelerated warm up system) Start the car in first gear, or start the car and blip the throttle lightly and the idle will drop.

That's normal. Try starting the car in gear, or quickly blipping the throttle upon startup and the RPMs will come down right away.
EDIT: Echo in here? Hehe... Mitch: Ya beat me by a minute! :p: |
Hey, I know, just try starting the car in 1st gear, or just blip the throttle and the idle will drop.
.......just thought i would try to fit in :weed: Actually, does it happen after the car is warmed up? or just when you first start it. If it does this after the car is warmed up, and then start it, it is possible you have a vaccum line loose somewhere. If it is only on first/cold startup, than it is the AWS. |
This is normal for a stock car.

Peace. Relax. Enjoy the ambiance.
Cold start in the morning, let it run for 10-20 seconds at 3K, then the idle will drop to normal. Clears the rich fuel load used for cold start..? Then zoom out of there like a bat out of Texas... The automatic cannot be started in first gear, but if you depress the shift lock and give it a second to spool down, it seems to drop when put into gear; too fast and you get a bad kharma thump on the high idle shift. |
thats normal
it does that to warm up the pre-cat.. or that as i was told |
Although I understand this is "normal," I would like to reduce the cold fast idle speed (don't have a pre-cat). Can anyone tell me if there is a mechanical adjustment that can be changed for that purpose?
Thanks! ---- Bill |
im not totally sure but i think if you swap out the stock ecu, the AWS goes away..correct me if im wrong..
but i always start the car in 1st anyway.. no hard work needed.. i dont like the idea of the rpms shooting to 3k with like hardly any oil pressure yet.. |
i always start mines in 1st or sometimes i'd let it jump to 3K jus once and a while
i believe theres threads on how to get rid of the AWS by plugging one of the lines |

Thanks! ---- Bill Once you have that plugged if your cold start idle is still to high (in your opinion)you can adjust cold idle with the "fast idle cam" explained in the workshop manual on pg F-79 |

Bill I only disable mine in summer, but use it for winter but with revs adjusted for about 1200 rpm startup. To answer your question, screw in the adjusting screw for the hot wax rod system on the throttle body and this will reduce tha max revs for cold startup. The service manual has good notes on this system. |
Thanks to you all for the guidance. Very good info; I'll give it a try.
