High Flow Cat Preferences and Preferred Vendors
Hey Guys
Just failed my Ontario Emissions test - worst numbers they have ever seen at my garage. I could have sworn there was a whole thread devoted to this, but I couldn't find it. What's the word on aftermarket cats and which vendors seem to be the most popular? |
The Bonez sold by Rotary Performance seems to hold up the best. The RX-7 Store cat is also decent and reasonably priced. Its a lot easier to pass with a stock cat than a high flow fyi.

Thank you!
I know it will be harder to pass with a highflow - it seems none of the RX-7 guys are passing in Ontario, we're all getting conditional passes. The way that works is they 'diagnose' the problem, and if it will cost more than $450 to fix you get a conditional pass for two years (that's how long you have between etests anyway). But my car does reek, so I'm hoping a highflow cat will give me the same performance (I'm assuming my cat is shredded or something) and maybe upset my wife a little less. |

+1 on the Bonez from rx7.com For emissions, try and find a good condition, low mileage stock cat used or get together with the other RX7 guys and buy a new one that you can all use for testing purposes only so it doesn't get worn out. Use the Bonez for the rest of the year. Make sure the air pump is working. Use 7 and 9 heat range plugs like stock. Use regular oil w/ low amounts of ZDDP for the test. It all helps. |
That was my other plan.
It seems there may be some problem in shipping a cat cross border, but I'll have to look into that. I'll see if I can dig up a stock unit from someone local if all else fails. |
I bought a Pettit Cat off the forum a few years ago. I wouldn't recommend it and have moved on with now using a Knightsports Metalit 300cpsi.

What didn't you like about the PR cat Sonic? Just out of curiousity

What are the modifications to the engine? Is your air pump working?

A few years later I finally researched cell counts and metallic vs ceramic cores. I bought a used Knight Sports metalit cat after deciding on metallic. There is a ton of info on the forum/internet that will help you out. |
