high flow cat with no air pump

would the high flow cat get messed up if i don't run the air pump?

RX7 RAGE 06-20-07 09:04 AM

I'm pretty sure it's life would be shortened.

this has been discussed a ton, and i think it's still debated. here's a multi-page thread on it. search and you'll find more.

Didn't answer the question there. It just became a sales pitch in that thread.

the rotary engine by design needs to be rich at idle to run without misfiring. the converter needs to see 14.7 air fuel ratio to function correctly.

so thats the air pumps job, too add enough air into the exhaust to make the mixtures more "cat friendly".

the question is, is the metal cat robust enough to handle that? normal cats are not

this may be dumb but if you would be building a custom exhaust system, would it help to move the HF cat back to cope with the heat (in case of no airpump)

i have a the pettit high flow cat with no air-pump. when i asked pettit about it, they said it would be fine but it might shorten the life of the cat. i plan on going with a resonated midpipe soon in the future so i dont mind if the cat craps out earlier than normal
