High emissions

I know it may not be relevant due to me being in the UK, but I cant get my FD through the annual check (MOT) due to high emissions.


I know from the posts I have looked at its a bit of a black art. But I am not sure where to go with it.

After arguing with the tester I managed to get them to test it on a old fashioned non cat test. The limit in the UK for CO is 3.5 and mine was reading 5.

Tester told me to check the Lambda sensor as it seemed to him to be over fuelling(smelt). When I got home I found that the sensor was disconnected. Also I noticed that one of the air pump wires were broken. And finally the large pipe on the bottom of the intercooler had come off. This answered one question as it was down on power on the way to the garage.

Sorry for the ramble, but does anyone more experienced think the emissions failure could be down to one or more of the issues mentioned??


The car is on a standard ecu. The only mods are a high flow cat and 3" cat back exhaust. Also I have fitted Apexi twin cone air filters. Other than that it standard as far as I know.


Any advise would be greatly appreciated as always

Having the O2 sensor not plugged in is a huge one, and if the air pump isn't running that's another huge one. I would also put a fresh set of plugs in.

With just that you should be close to passing if not passing.

+1, the o2 sensor and the air pump are both critical emissions parts.

You'll most definitely fail if you can't get the airpumps clutch to engage, I've passed cars with no O2 sensor, but it took some fiddling, I'd just replace it.

Also, if you're still having issues most people don't understand how important the ACV/port air portion of the smog system is. Pull it off and clean it if you've got the ability.

yeah the port air system is THE emissions part.

If your cat, O2 sensor, and airpump are working your tailpipe CO should be 0% (like literally way less than 1%) with everything warmed up.

Sooo,

Represented the car today after fixing the previously mentioned issues.

For good measure I chucked in some cat cleaner and give it a good spanking before taking it back.

Result: Passed with flying colours!! CO: 0.1 and HC: 60 PPM....Well pleased!

It's great to see the results posted back. I wish that more people would do that!

One other idea for anyone who comes across this thread. A fresh change of oil can help with the HC. Can't say that I've seen the results directly with the FD but I have in other cars. I would think that with the way our cars fuel dilute motor oil, this would be a big deal.

Was there an air pump issue?
