Well Im not 100% sure but I believe that white smoke means blown coolant seal. I hope I wrong and its not though.

MOBEONER 09-16-08 07:27 PM

my car smokes like that and i believe its the turbos.l

1sikrotary 09-16-08 07:30 PM

its the turbo(s) blown seals

badddrx7 09-16-08 07:30 PM

Smell of anti-freeze or oil? report back

later

MOBEONER 09-16-08 07:33 PM

its definitely the turbos,if it where a coolant seal failure he would have noticed

Dream Theater 09-16-08 08:07 PM

Yeah its blue smoke guys, and im getting oil in the intercooler piping as well... And I noticed that in addition to boost the car is over heating. I'm assuming there is a direct connection between the 2.

MOBEONER 09-16-08 08:22 PM

if your car is over heating then its a coolant seal

way to make it black and white, just cuz it's overheating, doesn't mean it's a coolant seal, tho it is possible

The car only overheats when im pulling hard and after I shut it down for the night and the smoke clears I notice oil leaking under the car...ergo small puddles here and there. Let me give you guys the run-down and you can give me your opinion.

1. i think my WP gasket has gone out as when I start thec ar up everyday my buzzer comes on and I have to put coolant in. I go to work and the car is fine for the day but come next morning need to put coolant in due to buzzer.

2. Above problem with smoke and oil in the upper intercooler pipe. (Have yet to check the lower pipe)

3. Um yeah help???

First FD and I bought it moded to Non-Seq so i'm like wtf mate??? :Wconfused :icon_no2:

i hate to say this but your post scares me alot. i hope for your case its a WP gasket but unless u can actually see it leaking it sounds like coolant seals. not 100% sure just sounds like it. let it sit overnight and pull the plugs and see if there is coolant on em.

Dream Theater 09-17-08 08:24 AM

Na no coolant on the plugs. There is a visual leak on the front of the car where the WP pulley is though... Kinda sux because its running down the front of the car and onto the oil pan therefore making a mess in the morning. I'll keep you guys posted. Most likely gonna pull the WP off the car and re-gasket it this weekend. Oh Joy...

mattgottheFD 09-17-08 08:37 AM

if your not boosting and there is oil in your ic piping i would definitly say turbos are toast. im gettin mine rebuilt right now!:)

Are you sure the coolant leak is not the WP seal? That requires a new WP, of course.

KKMpunkrock2011 09-17-08 02:03 PM

if it is just a water pump seal requiring a new WP, be thankful, it's A LOT cheaper than the full rebuild. But it does sound like your turbos are shot.

Dream Theater 09-17-08 02:36 PM

Well since I had nothing to do today this is what I did with my time... Question is do i jsut go single turbo or put another set of twins on... Suggestions??? Oh and since I'm at this stage is there any other maintenance you guys would suggest?

your turbos are done :(. time for you to go single turbo :)

KKMpunkrock2011 09-17-08 02:49 PM

BNR's, bigger injectors, ignition coil, FMIC or V-mount, PFC, boost controller... i know there's something else i'm forgetting.

+1

Dream Theater 09-17-08 03:08 PM

Single Turbo sounds good to me... lol

I wanna make a minimum of 400whp... Any suggested setups you guys recommend?

bewtew 09-17-08 03:12 PM

it all depends on what you want to do.. track/drag or street. is the 7 your only car? if yes i recommend you getting another daily driver.

DaleClark 09-17-08 03:15 PM

Get a good used set of twins and get back on the road. Your posts don't sound like you have a lot of experience with the car, and "slapping on a single turbo" is a good way to build an engine grenade. IMHO, a single turbo should be VERY carefully considered and planned, as there is a lot of supporting mods that need to be done to go with the turbo.

Get some good twins on there and get your car running RIGHT. It should run clean, no overheating or anything weird, no leaks, etc.

Dale

I hate that view. Changed out my turbos twice and it sucks seeing them off.

I know this is only my opinion.

As for your single or twin question: It really depends on what you want. single is great for high horse power and simplicity under the hood while making you a contestent in the 1/4 mile. However; twins will give you a better daily driver and road course car.

Check your oil pump. It will be easier to replace it now if its going bad then after you have the turbos on.

MAXX65 09-17-08 03:24 PM

A set of twin BNRs can get you 400 whp. Plus you will have better low end power than with a single

bewtew 09-17-08 03:24 PM

i agree with dale. i'll sell you my set they got 58k miles and running strong! :)

MrNizzles 09-17-08 03:48 PM

^ + 100. Agreed, get a new wp too, coolant lines and fuel lines, a new fpd, fuel filter, clean the injectors, replace the radiator and ast, replace vacuum lines with silicone ones, do all the other 60k or 100k tune up stuff... and if you have the $$$ get a set of BNR's for your twins as rebuilding stockers or purchasing rebuilt ones have a sucess of 50% actually working for the first 1-2k miles... and I don't think you want to replace them again. So, if you have to, try to buy working stock turbos that have not been rebuilt rather than just freshly rebuilt. Rebuilt turbos are not like a rebuilt motor.

good luck and I admire your ability to dive in and rip those turbos out.

badddrx7 09-17-08 04:07 PM

Is your lower intake manifold gasket made of paper? Known failure point - if so change to metal. Also change the coolant hoses.

Thanx for the compliment. Ok so this not by daily, my GTU is my daily but I am no stranger to boost as my 10 AE is quite the beast. I was thinking of mimicking that setup but I figure on the FD I could probably do better. More add-ons, and a few tricks here and there. Anyway, with the ease of taking off teh turbos im thinking of putting my extra twins that I have on, but the only issue is this. The twins that were on the car were part of a Non-Seq setup. The twins that I have now were not. Can I remove the actual turbines and bolt them up to the already welded wastegate and also remove the prespool actuator? Thoughts, comment, feelings?

:icon_tup:

MrNizzles 09-17-08 05:47 PM

There's plenty to read on non-seq turbos and depending on what was done to the extra set you have, you may not need to dissasemble both and swap turbines as that seems to me to be a llot more work. maybe you might want to go non-seq since you are this far along. I hear it's much easier to maintain.

Dream Theater 09-17-08 08:07 PM

I already am Non-Seq. Hence why I asked about swapping the actual turbines. Seemingly you have answered my question though. Thank you.
Oh here's the progress so far.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...1/DSC_0041.jpg

And here's where the WP was apparently leaking. Can't really see but yeah the gasket was trashed and leaking on to the block.

Dream Theater 09-17-08 10:28 PM

hey as a secondary question... Im trying to swap out the turbines on the stock twin setup... I seem to have come to a halt as I cannot seperate the turbines from the housing. I've removed all the bolts that are coupled with a securing plate but the turbine doesnt move spin or anything. Any help would be appreciated. Scratchin my head here... lol

You guys are great. This is what it sounds like from a woman's perspective:

"Hoary! Your engine is not blown! You don't have to spend $4,000 to fix it because it is only your turbos. Well, they are blown anyways so you might as well spend $4,000 and go single turbo"

You guys crack me up.

On a side note I really wouldn't bother going single. If it were me I would fix the turbos, sell the car and buy someone elses single project they dumped 10 grand into. They are a dime a dozen now (sadly, because many have to part with it to keep their house)

Props for doing your own work!

AHarada 09-18-08 04:30 AM

The CHRA's themselves are only held in by the (is it 6? I forget) bolts and plate things between each 2 bolts. If they don't come out, then you need to tap them out with a hammer.

Dream Theater 09-18-08 11:47 AM

ThanX for the props. Yeah I'm like why go single when I get a good set of twins and work those till they die and save a little cash to go single in the future. Besides I'm not trying to break and land speed records right now. LOL
