Help! Rear hatch won't stay up
Has anyone replaced their stay dampers? Do I need to buy the OEM part from mazda or will any auto store replacement work? Damn that hatch is heavy!

Hey, newb: Ever think about NOT replying if you are just going to be a smart-ass? It doesn’t take any more effort to HELP than it does to insult. FYI, the search for this topic yielded far less than “37” results, but thanks for your AWESOME insight. For the guy that needed some assistance: Off the CD: Right side 8BFA-62-620 hard suspension 8BF9-62-620 normal suspension Left side 8BF6-63-620 hard suspension 8BF5-63-620 normal suspension Unsure if any aftermarket units work.. I haven't tried. |
Also.. Might PM this guy:

From one USAF bud to another, thanks for the help!
Sorry to waste .5k of internet space on this board, I'm sure I made some mainframe crash. |

- is the most fequently used by people that don't like the new people on the forum as if that could intimidate me(since I'm a low poster). I do know alot about cars, but most of the needed info on these has been documented in this forum. I was simply pointing out the search function. If you give a man a fish, he is full for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll be full for a life time. |
check Ebay, I usually see a couple sets for sale. They are the OEM ones, and the guy selling them has them set at a good price.

Teach a man to fish and he'll be full for a life time. I have no problems with new people here.. It's the new people that act like they get paid to come here and tell people to "search" that I don't like. You could have just 'not' posted and been just as helpful. :) |
Well he might have not seen the Search function before either...

I've been on this forum a long time, don't ever need to post much because I usually find whatever info I need. I didn't feel like weeding through the 500 messages when I searched, so I thought I'd ask an easy question, figuring some helpful person that knows instantly could take 20 seconds and help me. It's the vague questions like, "is the rx 7 reliable?" that you should be after, not mine.

Part numbers on struts can change depending on who Mazda had manufacture them, besides whether they are for a deck with a wing or heavy duty suspension or not.
My hatch would not stay up; it had a heavy aftermarket wing and probably non-wing struts. I got replacements that had about 70 pounds force according to the bathroom scale, versus the 64 or so for the old ones. That was enough to keep the back deck aloft. It is nice to have them work right. |
I bought a used pair off a 3rd gen, so I'm sure that'll be better than no damper tension at all. Thanks for everyone's help.

Brian, I have a spair set you can have unless you already paid for the other ones..
