Help me save this car

First, hello to all, my name is Craig. I am new on this forum and to rotaries in general. I have always dreamed of owning a 3rd gen RX-7, and I happened to get lucky. I found a '93 (think it may be a R1) that has been totally molested. Which for me is good because it was all I could afford. It has a lot of mods, but needs some work. I have been building my dsm off of information from the forums for the past two years. There are so many problems, I don't know where to start. If anyone wants to help me, I'll start explaining problems.

First thing is first, start with a compression test so you know the health of the engine:

There is no sense in going balls out if the engine already has some issues.

Thanks for linking to that page. I haven't seen the poor man's compression test info before, but it makes sense. What if there is a stuck or damaged side seal? How would that alter the pattern? Sorry to jack your thread liv4psi. BTW you might want to check out the archives and the stickies on the forum. Lots of good info there. Also, don't forget about the search function. Welcome to the forum.

So, you started a thread to ask if people want to help you?

A bad side seal would make the rotor have bad compression on one face, where a bad apex seal would make it bad on two. I don't think side seals usually stick, unless it is from rusting due to a bad coolant seal.

I'd like to see pics of this molestation.

We'll certainly help, but if you think you are going to save money in the long run by buying a POS, well, you are wrong. :(

Alright, sorry to take so long to post back. I only asked if someone was willing to help because it will take some patience. I know some about turbos and nothing about rotaries. I have dreamed of owning an RX-7 and this is may be my only chance. The car could be solid or need mostly rebuilt, I am fine with either. Plus I enjoy new projects. I have pics but I cant seem to get them posted, if someone could give me idiot proof instructions.

I bought the car from a used car dealer who knows nothing about the car, or cars in general for that matter. I know it has been pretty heavily modded, but as to some parts I unsure of what was used. Anyways, problems with the car. It idles at 2,500 to 3,000 rpms and surges up and down sometimes, but sometimes it will hold steady at 2,500. The power cuts out when driving, like the motor is choking. If you give it more gas it comes back. Also if I accelerate enough to go into boost it feels like I'm hitting fuel cut and it like running into a brick wall.
The obvious-
TUNE-UP. The car has been sitting for a long while so I need change all fluids and filters. I need help on what is best to use, such as redline heavy or ..... Also a list of things that I should replace and/or check before I start. Compression check will hopefully happen tomorrow.

NO TUNING. It has a single turbo that I was told was a Greddy T-66, but I don't think it is. It has an SX afpr so I am assuming it would also have injectors and a fuel pump. The afpr doesn't even have a gauge on it, so that tells you how littletuning has been done. There is a profec b, but nothing to control air/fuel. I am assuming this is a large part of it but I don't know if it is everything.

PLUGS EVERYWHERE- there are at least a dozen unplugged connectors. Most of which are located in a harness under the intake manifold. The only plug in that is actually connected from that harness is a small one that goes by the upper radiator hose. There is a pic of the connectors for my profile pic if you want to look.

If someone one can help me figure how to link my pics I will post them asap. Until then, any input is appreciated. Thanks for the patience as I am a newb and learn as I go.
