Help master key broke
 

Well just got my new fd and out in my key to unlock my door and the key snapped in half, I got it all out, but that is the only key available,


Do I need to purchase all new keys?

Just go to the dealership with proof you are the owner (registration or title). With you providing VIN, they can cut you a key.

Well I ended up calling a Locksmith, and the guy made the key after all lucky I guess, total cost was $120 bucks so not bad at all

Yep. A good locksmith can either use the VIN or the key code (it's hidden on one of the key cylinders if memory serves) and make a new key.

It's also worth having a new key made from the key code/VIN as it isn't a copy of a worn down original key.

I had to deal with this recently. For future reference the key code is on the passenger door lock cylinder. I was able to call Ray and have a new key cut and sent to me for $15 or so. I'd assume other Mazda dealers would be able to do the same, but you might have to call around.

Definitely a better option than the local locksmith who wanted me to take out the ignition to take to them and cut a new key...NO THANKS.

^ indeed.... I paid 35$ Canadian for both side at my local locksmith

the DEALERSHIP would have cut you a new key on a MAZDA key blank for like $27, and they are a ripoff

You want to deal with a GOOD locksmith that knows what they're doing. One of the RX-7 guys here is a locksmith and would do that key for $10-20 if that.

I need his help to get me some keys for my 240sx. one and only key i got is worn down to a chop stick and I'm always in fear to use it.
I need to call the dealership first to see if they can pull the vin.
Heard they don't store data that is more than 10 years old.

I had this issue with my other FD. The keys that I got were definitely a copy and one of them was pretty bent. Getting into the car was a pain at times and I broke keys in there at least 3 times. I decided to get a key cut from Mazda and NEVER had any issues ever again.

Could have had the dealer make you a key from the Vin for like $20 lol

This sounds like something I need to do. I only have worn copies. I highly doubt my Mazda dealer will be able to help but I hope I am wrong. Would easily pay $20 to get a new correctly cut key. Hell I'd pay $40. LOL

the key code is supposed to have been put in the Mazda computer when the car was sold new, if it was, it will still be there.

Man I had 2 new keys cut for $20 for the pair recently.

$120 to cut one key is an absolute rip off of the worst kind. Sorry but you got reamed badly by paying that much for such a simple service..

I had a similar Problem, my key is on the verge to snap.

I pulled out the complete unit containing the key cylinder just not to find any 5 digit number (which I was told to search by my german Mazda dealer). After that I looked at the key to find the 5 digit number on there. Gave it the dealer, key will be made shortly.

So lesson learnt, first look at the key! :lol:

all of those keys wear out, they usually have a big first cut in them too, so they are really weak. the Mazda key, believe it or not is made of something better than the aftermarket, and will last longer.

Mazda went to a key blank without the big cut in the side in 1997 or so, the FD got it 10/97

Had same problem with original key 'twisted' from opening the door a long time ago. Ordered a new key blank from MazdaParts (9 bucks or so) but never got around to getting it cut. Just last week I walked into the Mazda dealership in Raleigh with my blank and VIN - they verified ownership and cut me a new master key from my blank - for FREE.

This was also similar in my case, the dealer told me the blank key would be 16,50 Euro, for the cutted key I paid 16,45 Euro, so it even got cheaper! :lol:

Only problem is, the brand new key goes into the worn out key cylinder on the driver side only with fiddeling. Ignition lock works fine though.

I was able to get a key cut successfully today at my dealer. Weather really sucks so I didn't drive RX there. Brought my title as proof of ownership. It cost just under $16.

So two things, it is probably not the correct era blank they used, looks like my mid 90's Miata key, round end. And when I got home and tried it on all the outside locks, I would say it works no better, and maybe worse than the key I already had. It got stuck in the hatch lock, almost didn't get it out. The cuts are not a consistent mirror image. Will have to bring it back and maybe have them redo it.

What are people using to lube the outside cylinders? Normal graphite lock powder?

Can a locksmith refit or refurb the cylinders? My ignition key works fine, the weather over the years has obviously gotten to my outside locks.

They sure can , bring both locks to them and tell them to make a key that fit for both

(Bring the ignition one if you want it to be the same)

I had something similar happen with my Miata a few summers ago. I was out of town visiting family and my key snapped, leaving about 3/4 inside the ignition. We fished that out (thank god my wife left some tiny crochet hooks in the Miata) and took everything to the local hardware store. It was like 3:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday. $10 and 20 minutes of waiting for the guy to be free got me two brand new keys cut.

I'd say that $120 for a single replacement key was a great deal... for the locksmith!! :lol:

every ~90 to 1997 Mazda used the same key blank with a couple of different head designs, so there are a few different part numbers. if they used a Mazda key blank, it will have a Mazda logo, the aftermarket blanks won't

Thanks, a much better description than I gave. It is a Mazda blank, just with a round head.
