Help Low Oil Pressure

im about to buy this 94 rx7 which has 42000km on it. and check out the compression and everything is fine. just the mechanic said the oil pressure is low. its at like 10psi when idling(not using the sock oil presure gauge, we used a mechanical guage). but rises when u rip it. also the engine has been streetported does this make a difference?. also the mechanic said it could be a bad oil pump. is the oil pressure thing normal?

the compression tests results were 100 psi whats that in kg 7.2 or so?

thanks in advance

The stock sending unit sucks. It isn't very reliable, and it can get kind of sludged up as well. Try pulling the sending unit, and cleaning it out with some brake cleaner.

Be careful, if the oil metering pump is bad, it will cost you about $2400 to have it replaced!

Make sure the OMP is not bad on that car.

It may be the internal oil pressure valve in the motor that is not working correctly...

People always talk about the
Oil Sending UNIT.. being so crappy
and should be cleaned out..

OK So where is the OIL SENDING UNIT???

Thanks....

Grrrr, does no one read? He said he was using a mechanical gauge, that makes all the info about the POS stock electrical gauge not pertinant. According to the fact service manual, the engine should make 60 psi by 3000 rpm. If it does that, then according to mazda, it's ok. As for the compression. I honestly do not have a clue of what the compression should be for a healthy motor.

yes i used a mechanical and the psi was at 10psi. is that low? do i need to replace the oil pump?

violator 05-17-02 03:35 AM

what are some symptons of having low oil pressure? the car idles fine and stuff.

Want2race 05-17-02 03:44 AM

is there enough oil ???

violator 05-17-02 04:19 AM

yes there is.

artowar2 05-17-02 04:40 AM

Where did you take the pressure reading from?

violator 05-28-02 01:51 AM

i didnt take the oil pressure reading the mechanic did. he took off the elbow and took the readings from im guessing just below the throttle body.

93TTRX7 05-28-02 04:15 AM

my oil pressure gets pretty high...when i squeeze the trottle it gets up to 100-110. Also why is the oil metering pump so expensive to replace? 2400 sounds like insanity

RedR1 05-28-02 04:26 AM

2400 is a new motor, or a suspension kit, or some volk rims. . .i could go on :)

It is insanity.

OMP: $1400 just for the part (I had to wait 2 weeks for the part to be shipped from Japan)
labor: atleast 8 hours + tax
= $2300-$2400

If it wasn't covered by warranty, I would have risked buying a used one or just went with pre-mix for a while.
