help locating 2 nuts holding the clutch master cylinder on
 

Hey guys,

I was working on a couple of FD's today and we actually got all of them up and running perfectly. Just as we finished up the last FD and were gonna go on a cruise, one of the FD's push his clutch pedal down and he heard a pop and his clutch pedal went all the way down to the ground and he could not shift to any gears. We tried flushing the clutch system but that did not work. There were no leaks in the system/lines so we figure it is the clutch master cylinder.

BTW: If the car is off we can shift in to any gear easily and when we start it in first gear, it will move the car foward via the starter. We also already checked the clutch fork thru the service hole and that is fine, there does not seem to be anything wrong in there. Also, when we push on the brakes, there is a gurgling/popping noise. Idk if this is related to the problem or not but the brakes work perfectly fine.

This is where you guys can come in and help... I need your help finding/locating the 2 nuts holding the clutch master cylinder on. I know they are under the dash/firewall inside the cabin and that the master clutch cylinder is in the engine bay on the other side of them but I just cant find them. Are they under some kinda plate or something? When I look at the clutch pedal, is the master clutch cylinder attached right to that (via a rod that pushs that piston in and out)? Is it above that? I found one nut attached to that piston/clutch pedal thingy and it was a 12mm nut, are the 2 nuts holding the master CLUTCH cylinder on 10mm or is this one of them?

BTW: pics and drawings are welcome :D Even MS paint ones are good and would help alot!

There is probably some of the foam sound deadening mat covering the nuts or something. They will be on eithe side of the shaft. I don't remember having any trouble with them when I rebuilt my master cylider. Just get in ther and take a look and I'm sure you'll find them. It is possible that the nuts are in the engine bay if the master cylinder just has holes rather than studs in it. I don't remember the details exactly, but I don't recall having any trouble getting it out. The rebuild was pretty easy, too. The hard part was bleeding it once I had all the new stuff installed.

I had the slave cylinder come loose from the bell housing once, and I didn't realize it until after I rebuilt the master and installed a new clutch line. I felt a little silly when I went to replace the slave and found it loose. You might want to check that before digging in to mess with the master. My slave looked fine from a quick visual insection, but one bolt was out quite a bit and bent and the other was backed out 1/2" or so. Use a wrench to check the bolts when you inspect it.

thanks, btw, when you blead the clutch, do you push the clutch pedal down and then open the valve or do you open the valve and then push the clutch pedal down?

Your best bet would be to run down to your local AutoZone or Pep Boys and pick up a Brake Bleeder Kit. It only takes one guy to operate, no pumping the pedal shit. I got mine for like $26 @ AutoZone. Hooked it up put 25hg vacuum on the slave cylinder and cracked the bleeder valve. Watch out that you don't suck the reservoir down and suck air because you will defeat the purpose of this whole exercise.:p: Also I found that for this to work affectively you need to put some pipe tape on the treads of the bleeder valve of the slave cylinder. :cool:

hmmm, can you fit break bleeders on the clutch slave cylinder? if so, what is the part number?

I don't quit understand what you mean by "what is the part #?" But like I said N E Auto parts store will carry a KIT that is called a Vacuum tester/Brake Bleeder. It comes with an assortment of rubber fittings that snap onto the nipple end of the bleed Vv. Pull 25hg of vacuum on the system and if will remove all the air and fill it with fluid. You may need to do it 3 to 4 times to get everything out the air that is. If this does not answer your questions than send a round trip flight ticket to P.O. box 1993-7 Port Hueneme, Ca 93041 and I will come out to you with my Brake bleed Kit and afterwards we'll have a beer and laugh together about how much you spent on my flight for me to show you how to do something a blindfolded chimp couldn’t do. :D
