Help-idle Problems

BOUGHT 93 TOURING 4 MONTHS AGO. BEEN HAVING IDLE PROBS SINCE I BOUGHT. IT IDLES AT 1500 RPMS UNTIL IT WARMS UP A LITTLE BIT THEN IT HUNTS 1200-1400 THEN AS IT GETS NORMAL OP TEMP IT SETTLES TO 1200. WHEN COOLING FAN TURNS ON IT DROPS TO 800 AND FEELS ROUGH. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER SAID ECU IS OK. TOOK IT TO A LOCAL MAZDA SHOP THE SAID STUCK SEAL I HAVE NO MODS. HELP POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THANKS

Most of the idle problems i've come accross involved a vac leak between the throttle body and the intake port of the motor.

I've got one.

When I put it in neutral, the RPMS drop fast to about 1100 then stop. Then they slowly settle down to 800-850. Normal?

I bought my 93 fd and when it whould be wormed up it would still idle around 1500 i had my wax pellet replaced and its good now idling around 750-800 but before hand it was having the same problem you were describing.

THANKS FOR THE HELP DAMIAN. I'M GONNA TRY IT TOMORROW. I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT UNDER INITIAL TAKE OFF, ANY LOAD, IT SOUNDS LIKE A CLACKING NOISE. KINDA LIKE THE THROTTLE BODY???

SO I CHECKED THE VOLTS. THEY ARE ALL RUNNING HIGHER THAN TOLERANCE EXCEPT BOTTOM FULLY OPEN. THE CAR HAD BEEN SITTING FOR 1/2 HR BEFORE TESTING. WOULD THIS MAKE A DIFFERENCE? THE CAR IS STOCK AND THE PAINT MARKS ON THE TPS HAVEN'T BEEN TOUCHED, SO HOW WOULD IT HAVE CHANGED? THANKS

I had the same idle problems and it turned out to be my intake manifold gasket. Running just fine after replacement.

lower gasket or upper? how did you test yours?

jetmech77 Jul 15, 2003 12:06 AM

Yes I agree sounds like your intake manifold gasket...you can verify by taking a propane torch (that is not lit!!) and puting the propane around the manifold gasket area . If your idle changes there you go.

CAN YOU GET TO THE LOWER GASKET WITH IT?

Engberg Aug 12, 2003 12:52 AM

DO NOT SHOOT PROPANE IN YOUR ENGINE BAY! I tryed using the old carb cleaner trick, which is basically the same as the propane trick but w/out blowing up your portion of the county. I spray and sprayed and it did not change idle. I only found out when I took the car to a shop and the more FD experienced mechanic looked at it, he diagnosed in an hour. What I've learned from the FD, when you try and try and try and you have no idea...pay someone who can and will solve the problem for you, even though no one likes to say they had to have someone else do it. :D

P.S. it was the lower gasket, and HUGE pain in the ass to get to...we are talking about an eight hour job for a typical weekend mechanic
