Help! I need to recharge my AC and think I might have R-134a instaed.

Heres the scene: I have to recharge my AC. I have a 93 R1 that comes with R-12 in it. I have a can of R12. I try to put it on the Low side but the adapting nozzle wont fit. I also have a can of R-13a with the nozzle on it. That coupler fits. I notice that all fittings made for R-12 are slightly smaller and have threading on the outside. Mine has a larger Low pressure fitting on the car with threading on the inside. This resembles a system which was changed over to R-13a. Any way I can tell which I have? Ive owned the car 3 years and just now needed to recharge the system.

I would say that it is safe to assume that since your fittings are different your system was swapped to 134a.

I converted my car last year and have had good results although the car does take longer to cool in our hot Texas summers. Look closely at the stickers under the hood and see if by chance someone labled that the system has been converted.

Converting my car to 134 was one of the first things that I did. That was about 3 years ago and my ac is pretty cool. You may have to replace other o-rings to to get it to hold a re-charge.

Pretty sure you have 134a. R-12 fittings screw on and 134 pops on like a compressor hose. The 134 adapters screw on the 12 fittings so they have thread inside like you said. When mine was converted they also changed the sticker under the hood.
