Help finding light bulb....

Ok...it just drives me BATSHIT to not have everything work on my car(s)....so when I noticed the light on the security system indicator was no longer working, I took it out (whilst in the middle of my shifter repair) and went to the dealer today to get a bulb.
No luck. Dealer said, "Hmmmm....looks like you need the whole unit."
Me: "Okay...how much is that?"
Dealer: "$89.93"

I about friggin' shat myself.
No WAY am I paying that much for that indicator lamp assembly.

So...does ANYONE have any idea where one can get a bulb like this? The ONLY markings on it are 'TS', and Google searches have been useless so far...

Can the bulb be pulled out or is that just how it is? I want to fix mine too.

Hmm.. let me go pull it out right now, my guess would be that it's a T5 bulb but thats if it comes out of that fixture.

okay def not T5 is way to friggin small. i'm going to try to extract it from the fixture now.

Mazdabation 01-12-09 08:15 PM

they are called Neo wedge base bulbs Auto Lumination has led replacements. http://autolumination.com/74.htm scroll half way down an you will see the Neo wedge. just measure your base diamater and match it up to theres

RLaoFD 01-12-09 08:18 PM

In that case, anyone looking to replace theirs needs to get 8mm :)

haha yeah i stopped after i saw your previous post.

I remember dealing with these type of bulbs when doing an LED retrofit on another car

You should be able to bend apart the metal wire that loops around the black plastic base, then straighten it out, and pull the bulb out. If you can an LED replacement, just clip off the bottom portion of it's base to expose the 2 wires, and stick it into the plastic base, and wind the wire back into place...

Not sure if that made any sense.

RLaoFD 01-12-09 08:41 PM

Funny how u mention that Eric, because I was just thinking 5 minutes ago that if the wires were to be straightened out the bulb can be lifted. I then decided just to order a whole new fixture from superbright.

bajaman 01-12-09 08:45 PM

Okay...so, what is the best 'fix'? Help an old man out here....

Mazdabation 01-12-09 09:02 PM

You can not buy them specifically for the 7. But the auto manufacturers still use/make them. If your dealership has none (mine did) floating around from other models, then just try Honda or Toyota etc.

these are a generic bulb for all of the auto industry, so they can be used from any manufacturer. The way the base lock is the same, its the diamater that chages, somake sure you measure that.

bajaman 01-12-09 09:05 PM

Thanks, I will go check around then.
Funny...the assistant service manager didn't even think of this. Perhaps that is why he is the ASSISTANT service manager....lol!

ObliqueFD 01-12-09 09:05 PM

You can take the bulb out of the base. Go to Radio Shack, they carry a replacement. It's probably the fastest and easiest way if you go there.

Hey Bajama this shifter thing is turning into a real project! Thanks for sorting out all the bugs before I start with my project. you can add all this to your shifter write up.

the bulbs that look like these, purhaps in your gauge cluster do come out....but the small Neo Wedge ones do not.

Nope, that bulb can be removed. I've done it. You just bend the wire back and pull it through the base.

Just did mine a couple months back, when to the dealership and they wanted me to pay for a whole unit. So I just went to circuit city, bought a small bulb, took the old one out of the black little base, put the new one in and it was good to go.

That was really my only succesful attempt at replacing bulbs in my 7, well I replaced the ignition light and worked out great, so I went to replace the keyhole light and burnt my cpu connector I think so they both dont work :wallbash:

I'll try to repair it using the Rat Shack bulb but if I fail, sure thing I will be interested.

Thanks!

IMZman 01-14-09 07:04 PM

Radio Shack bulb is the trick. $1.90 for a two pack.

It took me forever to find that shack bulb to. Im not sure about its brightness though.

I've read these are excellent bulbs.

I bought some extras if anyone wants to meet up and buy em from me.

20B 3 Rotor 01-15-09 05:44 PM

would these be suitable for the exterior keyhole light, and is there a proper way to solder it to the 2 wires, just wondering because I dont want to blow another cpu2.

Here are the PERFECT bulbs for the key hole light. They fit the little rubber holder perfectly, and have nice long leads to easily solder in. This is what I use.

key hole light uses a "grain of wheat" bulb. A lot smaller then these and fits into the rubber fastener in the back of the handle for the light. The wires come coated, unike the abovebulbs, which need to have bare wires so they can be formed around the Neo base.

Id recomend next time dissconecting the CPU2......solder the bulb wires and then reconnect the CPU2. This way you (we lol) wont be able to fry another one.

bajaman 01-15-09 07:17 PM

Just to clarify, the keyhole light is much larger than the lamp used in the security system indicator. Compare my post #1 to #29. The bulbs in #29 are perfect for the keyhole light.

Lol, good idea I never thought of just disconnecting the cpu2 while soldering it one. I am not too concerned about a bulb fitting into that rubber plug type thing, the previous owner just seemed to remove the original light and rubber plug, and left the two white wires hanging there, so I will just have to figure out some way else to fasten it. As for the bulbs, I will have to try and find that grain of wheat type bulb, all we have here in canada is circuit city, and they either have the security light bulb, or a led type bulb which is the one I tried and fried the cpu2 with.

I just pulled my grain of wheat bulb and used a bit bigger one. Go to The Source and look for a 12v Mini Lamp bulb stock #2721141 by Nexxtech. I used a small piece of silicone hose i had laying around. cut it to size and poped it in that to secure it. fit right in the plug for me......

20B 3 Rotor 01-16-09 10:34 AM

awesome, thanks.

Remember my recent post about "are you lucky?"

Somehow, after all this...after I got the bulbs from RadioShack to put in to the little socket.....I have managed to lose the friggin' socket! :dunno::wallbash:

It just figures.

LOL dont you know by now thats the way it always works! Even better when you put some small part in a spot where you know you wont lose it, and low and behold you cant remember where that stupid spot was!!

If its any consulation...i lost mine also! GRRRR So what i did was as i mentioned above. Find a piece of silicone hose from your box of crap (or least thats where mine was lol). i had a few different sizes, so i grabed the one that fit the bulb size best, cut it to approx length of that hole where the gromit goes. I then cut a notch out of the silicone in the area closest to the key hole (front bottom half of the silicone). I did this because if you left the sillicone whole, the light wouldnt be able to shine downwards not getting full illumination out of it, only straight out the end

This is for my security light but yeah....that is EXACTLY what I did! I mean, I remember grabbing the little fucker 'cuz I'd had it in my coat pocket for like a week, and I said to myself, "Self....better put this where it won't get lost...." and fuck me running if I STILL didn't somehow lose it!!!! :wallbash:

Ihor is looking for one.....

Mazdabation 01-18-09 10:41 AM

Oh sorry..thought you ment the rubber gromit for the key light.
