Help! Failed emissions
Guy said there were too many hydrocarbons? Happened to anyone? and what was the cause?
thanks joe |
Last time when I failed I had the same problem. Try changing the plugs and wires and you should pass easily. At least I did here in Washington.

are you still running the stock system...?

Or just read the FAQ. There is a link in there for passing emissions / smog:

Just toss in a couple gallons of denatured alcohol, that's what I did :-)
|
Buy the guy a 12-pack of beer.

Too many hydrocarbons usually means a bad main cat or a mal-functioning air pump. A bad O2 sensor can also contribute to this.
Do you still have the pre-cat? Other mods? How many miles? |
Thanks guys,
changing the plugs and 02 sensors today. Hopefully that will fix it. Other then that it has 80k and its a totally stock 94 R2 |
what kind of mods do you have?

my fd failed last year and my HC was high. mine's all stock. turned out my main cat was completely dead. replaced it, and passed cali smog with flying colors
if new o2 sensor and plug don't work, an easy thing is to just take off the main cat, shake it and look inside. also if you still have the pre-cat and your car's 80k, chances are it might already be crapped out too. replacing cat is easy; you might be able to borrow someone's to pass smog =P good luck |
Our '94, stock except pre-cat replaced with Bonez DP, passed CA emissions with a new main cat (stock) after failing with high CO first in stock form, then failing on HC with DP plus new Bonez main converter. The stock main cat is expensive (over $1200), but its internal design for distributing the injected air, and larger overall size made it superior to the Bonez cat.

dear joe,
|
1 gallon of denatured alcohol on 1/2 tank of gas. Make sure the engine / exhaust is plenty warm when you take it in, then top off the tank as soon as you can. This has worked for me on both my 3rd gen and 2nd gen.
