Help! Engine Replacement
She Who Must Be Obeyed (wife) has a '94 FD. Front rotor has zero compression (118,000 miles, original engine/turbos/clutch). I was wondering if anyone has dealt with any of the engine rebuilders or swappers and has a recommendation. I would like to street port it, put in a new clutch and replace the exhaust while I am in there.
I rebuilt a piston engine a while ago (with good results), but don't think I will be able to do the rotary myself (time and knowledge constraints). Any guidance/assistance would be greatly appreciated. Mark |
www.pineappleracing.com, i'd let rx7store.net do the swap

Here's a link to a thread that I started when I needed rebuild advice/information:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...highlight=port I also spoke to all of the Rotary shops in the SF Bay Area. From my research here's what I did: I ended up ordering a Mazda Reman from Ray(Great Guy!) @ Malloy Mazda($2195). Then had it shipped to Pineapple Racing for teardown, street port, stage 2 oil mods, upgraded coolant seals($1400)... Joel found some "bad" parts that were used in the Reman when he tore it down and inspected it. Mazda Reman motors are a crap shoot...Some people get good ones with no issues and some people get poorly rebuilt motors with old, reused parts and seals that a crap!. None of the Rotary shops that I spoke to will install a Mazda Reman motor. They have too much trouble with them. I also bought a Power FC/Commander/Datalogit which is required if you run a ported motor($1300), a new ACT S/S clutch ($500), + misc hoses, fasteners, gaskets, FPD, ect($500) My car is in the shop getting the new motor swapped right now($1400-???). I can't wait to get it back. I hope this helps! John |
You are also close to KD Rotary in PA, which is one of the most respected shops in the country. You will have a wait though. www.kdrotary.com
Everything I've heard about Pineapple is excellent as well. Jpandes: Hey John, are you having C2 put your new motor in. I noticed your car was there two weeks ago. |

I noticed your car was there two weeks ago. Yup, they are in the process of doing the R & R. It's taking longer than I expected. RC engineering is taking a week and a half to turn around 850 to 1300 cc injectors, and Will had a baby last week. I really need my car! I am commuting from SF to San Ramon on my motorcycle(CBR 600 F2) and it's drag! John |
Pineapple, gotham, KDR all do high quality rebuilds.

it is not too hard if you get a reman. i have details about my first engine swap on my web page:
http://www.alexwan.com/rx-7/journal/012103/012103.html if you rebuilt a piston one i think you can handle this as long as you have the patience, tools, and mechanical aptitude for the job. oh yeah a lot of time too. |
I went with a Mazda reman. I have been happy with it so far but if I had to do it again I would go with pineapple or gotham.
