Heavy Smoke from Ypipe after shutoff or during long idle
 

Hello,

I noticed this problem a week ago during a long red light where i saw smoke coming from my hood. I pulled over right away and popped the hood and there was smoke arising from the turbo area. I could not find the source and it stopped pretty quickly. This problem replicates itself whenever i turn off the car after driving for an extended period of time. The top of the ypipe is definitely shiny but i cannot tell whether its coolant or oil. The car does not smoke at ALL while actually driving.

ive found other threads while trying to diagnose the issue but they all have different results and varied similarity to my case.

Do you still have the hose from the top of the oil filler to the front of the front turbo?

This recycles blow by fumes from the oil reservoir.

If you overfill the oil, oil may rise up and flow down the tube to your front turbo.

If you remove the air pipe to the intercooler, you might see oil in the pipe.

Track down where that oil be coming from.

oil level is right in the middle :(

I had problems with oil smoke around the turbos after an oil change. I was dumping the oil in and some of the oil was getting into the hose going from the oil fill neck to the turbo primary inlet duct. Driving it would come up into the y-pipe and drip out of the place where the 2 halves of the Y-pipe join.

First thing is determining if it's coolant or oil. Very different smell. May also want to do a visual on the turbo coolant hoses, they are common failure points.

My car used to do this. As far as I could tell, there was an exhaust leak somewhere between the turbos and the engine (there are a few gaskets between them, the manifold, and the block). I could hear it pretty clearly when I pressure tested everything looking for leaks.

I pulled everything out, and put new gaskets in, and that seemed to solve it. I didn't see any obvious oil leaks in my case, but since I did replace all the oil feed line gaskets too I guess it could have been one of them as well.

Not the most helpful response, but you're not alone with noticing this.

Travelling
 

The source of the liquid could be elsewhere and travel around to the turbo area. One suspect could be the coolant lines that run round to warm the throttle body. There is one in the front that runs from the coolant filler neck, and one in the back that come off the "block" on the lower left.

If you take the undertray off, is there anything dripping?

Do a coolant system pressure test to try and find any leaking coolant hoses.

that o ring you mentioned is leaking in my car. My question now is: can i get away with only removing the front half of the ypipe to change the o ring or do i need to remove the whole ypipe?

Just remove the whole Y-pipe, it's not hard to do. That should only take 10 minutes or so to remove it and you can then thoroughly clean it off the car.

May also want to get new gaskets that go between the y-pipe and the turbos. They aren't much from Mazda.
