Headlights 😱😱

Hello all, hope you can shed some light my way please. I have a 92 fd. And all is well so far had a few teething issues but now all sorted. Apart from last night I was driving home and my headlights worked fine, and have been since owning the car. But I turned on lights today and they came on but not popped up. I have searched the site for previous and there are some good threads. But they all go on about a retractor relay next to the TNS relay(on mine it’s blue). But I don’t have a retractor relay there is a space but it’s blanked off never used. Sorry if this is old news to you people. I don’t think I have a bad earth as I am on nights and pulled her in to the engine house we’re I work and had a good look. And to be honest all seems well. Also I checked the blue relay and it seems to bench test well.
Help please.
kind regards
Jamie

That's not too common of a problem. You're going to need to get the shop manual and a multimeter and do some troubleshooting, There is a troubleshooting guide in the shop manual.

Yes thanks

Yeah was thinking just that, it’s a pain electrics are normally not my thing 😂😂 thinking its a faulty earth as they started working this morning then stoped. Then started again 😱😱 got to love old motors, keeps me on my toes lol

kind regards

Update.

Can’t find any earth fault. All lights work well but not pop up. I’ve also changed the relay just to be on safe side. Also they just stared working the other day perfect. Now stopped again.😱😱
also if I leave the dash switch left in over night I come back in morn and lights have popped up over night and stay Up. Thinking I am going mental. 😂
many help please.
Thanks
Jamie

Does it make a difference if you use the switch on the dash to pop them up? Does one way work more often than another?

This is not a common problem and it's going to be something particular to your car. You're going to have to get the shop manual and a multimeter out and do some troubleshooting. In the body electrical manual there most likely is a troubleshooting guide for the pop up headlights.

Thanks

Thanks Dale top comments. No nothing works on the dash switch or the stalk. I am going to have to get an auto electrician out I think. It’s above my pay grade😂😂
thanks

Just to note, I believe if the headlight dash button is disconnected/unplugged the head light will turn on but never popup. I forgot to plug this back in once and everything in the OP were my exact symptoms.

Electrical may seem intimidating, but it's really not. You just need to break it down. Start chasing the wiring diagram from one end to the other. I'd start with fuses and then check continuity. Relays are a little more difficult, but not that hard. Below is the wiring diagram

Again thanks

Neutron thanks for input. I’ve never touched dash button I don’t think and always seemed to work. The lights do come on but don’t pop. But I will double check👍 Tom thank you for posting diagram that will really help. I have checked all fuses and changed relay so far. But again top people thanks.

Did you verify the new relay works. Have you tested the other relay. Have you tested the switch. Have you tested the wiring continuity, including to ground. If you've done all that, the only other thing would be the motor itself.

Jay8789 02-06-20 02:12 PM

Good points.

I have tested that both relays work. But what do you mean switch????? sorry. working on the ground with volt meter. I think the motors are ok because they keep randomly working every few days. weird.
Thanks Jamie

There's a switch that bypasses the first relay (top left of the instrument cluster). Does that raise the headlights?

Jay8789 02-07-20 11:41 AM

Ok just checking

Ok so I forgot to say I am in UK with jap import so right hand drive. Do you mean the switch that just pops up the lights with out turning them on ect.
this also has stopped working 🧐🧐👍
kind regards
Jamie

Doubt RHD is different electrically from LHD, other than possibly routing. If the switch that pops up the headlights does not pop up the headlights, that should rule out the first relay (circled in yellow) because the switch bypasses that relay. If it doesn't pop up with that switch in the on position, you'll need to trace that circuit from the motor to the battery (in red). It could be a torn wire, blown fuse, faulty relay, or bad motor or bad ground. You can check the wiring by checking for continuity (measuring resistance). You can also check wiring (and the other components) by taking voltage readings with it on. Where do you stop getting a 12v reading? You just need to methodically go from one end of the circuit to the other

Wow

Genuinely Much appreciated! This proper puts things in to perspective and now I understand. You must be an auto mechanic surely.👍👍 I will try all this weekend. And again thank you

"Relay retra" has always been an issue with the popus. At least for me. I have a spare switch in case you need one

Jay8789 02-07-20 12:36 PM

Awesome thanks.

Are you UK based I will of course pay.
kind regards

I think it's part KA3267720 (same as the TNS relay?). You may be able to source locally. Email Ray Crowe (Crowe.Ray@aol.com) to confirm the part no. He may also be able to source it for you.

Good luck :icon_tup:

Probably. Reach out to him on shipping costs. He may also know if you can source locally. Ray used to be a Mazda parts manager in the States and knows FD parts inside and out. He still supports the community with OEM parts. The ones that are available that is :(

Before you spend money replacing it, you may want to test it. There are numerous posts online on how to test relays. Here's just one

Jay8789 02-09-20 03:39 PM

Thanks

I appreciate all your knowledge and thanks for posting. I am going to test tomorrow as I’ve just bought a new tester.

thanks mate
