Has anyone ported their UIM and remove the butterflies?

Just like to see if u thought if it was worth it........

HP / TQ gains if any?

throttle response changes?

CTHIS RX7 01-28-03 04:53 PM

I pulled my UIM off a couple of weeks ago and saw no need to port match it to the LIM as it looked pretty well matched anyway. But I did pull out the butterflies, dont think it would of helped much though it wasnt much of a restriction.

BATMAN 01-28-03 05:16 PM

Didn't robinette do this and noticed another pound of boost?

Flybye 01-28-03 07:10 PM

I didn't port it, but I had the UIM jet-hot coated. Their coating gave it the same texture as if it would have been polished. I also removed the butterflies. I don't know what affected what more, but there IS a significant differance that I felt. Boost seemed to come on faster.

The :moon: dyno said there was a nice increase :D

tekno62 01-28-03 08:09 PM

Flybye do you have photos? I would like to see what was done...

tekno

TwinTriangles 01-28-03 08:18 PM

Yea Id like to see what that jet-hot coating looks like since I just polished my UIM by hand I can kick myself in the ass if yours looks as good or better...

SpiritR 01-28-03 08:47 PM

JT ported his throttle, UIM, removed butterflies and polished it all. I dont know if he felt any power, I didnt ask

BATMAN 01-28-03 09:03 PM

I have photos, but need to convert it from TIFF to JPG

SpiritR 01-28-03 09:06 PM

I havent heard of TIFF, good luck

silver93 01-28-03 09:14 PM

tiff is a picture format, like jpg or bmp or whatever

nocab72 01-28-03 09:39 PM

batman - email them to me, I'll convert for you if you need. kyle@bacon.net

Well, here are where the butterflies are at:
http://bellsouthpwp.net/f/l/flybye/DTC.jpg

And here is my Jet-Hot coated UIM www.jet-hot.com
http://bellsouthpwp.net/f/l/flybye/UIM1.jpg
http://bellsouthpwp.net/f/l/flybye/UIM1.jpg

Coating it was about $140

Flybye 01-28-03 10:48 PM

On a side note, my buddy went custom single turbo last year. The guy making his manifold told him "If ya coat the exhaust manifold, the turbo will spool up almost 500rpms quicker"

Just a thought :)

Narfle 01-29-03 12:38 AM

removing the butterflies completely? they arent important. sorry...newb

SpiritR 01-29-03 01:22 AM

They are important if you have a heavy foot before your car totally warms up..

Nice Jet coat, that shite almost looks like chrome

BATMAN 01-29-03 01:51 AM

Barban, like SpiritR said those butterflies are just for warming up......... once warmed up it's useless....

So if u have self control and let the FD warm up then ur fine.

To do it right u should also port the UIM.

BATMAN 01-29-03 01:53 AM

If u polish it and then ceramic coat it, then it will look even better........... smooth surface and shinier.

U'll never have to worry about the exposed metal getting corroded ............. not to mention the least, the 20 - 35% heat transfer reduction and smoothed out passages from the ceramic coating on the inside....

Sinful7 01-29-03 02:04 AM

Hey Flybye did you have the inside of UIM coated too or just the outside.
Thanks.

Thanks.

Jethot coats their stuff inside & out.

By the way, the butterflies aint just for not boosting during warmup.....

As per the manual (not word by word) They are used to prevent a possible lean condition when boost begins to build up by allowing a gradual build up of boost into the UIM.

Yeah, I took a chance and did it before upgrading my ECU. I was going to install an ECU anyways. Well, after I removed them, I checked my O2 readings. Everything was ok :)

BATMAN 01-29-03 11:20 AM

If u have PFC and ported turbo wastegate everything should be fine right?

Tim Benton 01-29-03 11:56 AM

I plan on sending the extra pair of UIM and LIM to extrude hone for their services. $585 for both plus shipping. Not looking for big gains, just the little added flow for the engine.

Tim

Here are some pics of ones that I have done for someone:

*note that the top is powder coated wrinkle black for that "stock" look - this is for COPS in CA. The rest of it is like Flybye's ceramic coat*

Tim Benton 01-29-03 01:44 PM

what's the price for the porting and painting?

Heath 01-29-03 02:33 PM

So you removed the divider between the top two openings.......sweet! I have seen pics on the forum of where someone else did that but when I asked for the outcome I got no response. Are there any cons to doing this? I am thinking of doing it myself.

Can you post a pic looking in to the uim (on the tb side) where the porting has been done?

Thanks!

BATMAN 01-29-03 04:06 PM

here is another one that was done, but was only done in ceramic coat.
